Raigarh, Chhattisgarh: In a major step to prevent illegal coal mining and theft, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has deployed its 362nd specialized unit at the NTPC coal mining project in Talaipalli, Raigarh district. Initially, 101 personnel have been posted under the first phase of deployment, although the project has 265 sanctioned positions.

The induction of this dedicated CISF unit strengthens the security presence in the captive coal mine, which is a key part of India’s energy supply chain. The unit has been tasked with preventing disruptive activities, illegal mining, and other potential threats in the mining area.

Boosting Security in Strategic Energy Assets

The Talaipalli coal mine supplies coal to the Lara Super Thermal Power Plant, contributing significantly to stable electricity supply across multiple states. With an annual production of several million tonnes, the mine plays a critical role in supporting India’s energy self-reliance goals and national grid stability, while facilitating industrial growth in the region.

Given the scale of mining operations and past challenges related to left-wing extremism, a robust security framework has long been a necessity. The CISF’s presence ensures round-the-clock armed security, safeguarding personnel, equipment, and crucial infrastructure. The unit will also help prevent theft, secure the safe transport of coal and other critical materials, and coordinate effectively with district authorities.

Strengthening Local Safety and Development

The deployment is expected to enhance the overall safety environment for surrounding communities. It sends a clear signal that the central government prioritizes the protection of strategic energy assets in sensitive regions. The continuous coal production from Talaipalli supports regional economic growth, generates employment, and strengthens nearby industries. The CISF’s presence also improves emergency response capabilities and security management, creating a safer environment conducive to further development initiatives.

About NTPC Talaipalli Coal Mining Project

The NTPC Talaipalli coal mining project is a key component of India’s energy infrastructure, providing coal for the Lara Super Thermal Power Plant. The mine’s output contributes to reliable electricity supply across several states and bolsters regional economic and industrial development. The phased deployment of the CISF unit is aligned with the project’s expansion and growing infrastructure requirements, ensuring enhanced protection for this strategically important energy resource.
