Hyderabad: In a landmark development for India’s critical minerals sector, the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has received the official Certificate of Exploration License for the Nawatala-Devigarh Rare Earth Elements (REE) Exploration Block in Rajasthan. The license was awarded in a ceremony held during the National Seminar on the Centre of Excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission in Hyderabad.

Certificate Presentation Ceremony

The certificate was presented by Mr. G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Coal and Mines, to representatives of CMPDI. Receiving the license on behalf of CMPDI were Mr. P. M. Prasad, Chairman of CIL; Mr. Rajiva Kr. Singh, General Manager (Exploration), CMPDI; and Dr. R. P. Singh, Senior Manager (Geology), CMPDI. The event highlighted the growing importance of rare earth elements in India’s resource strategy and the government’s commitment to strengthening domestic exploration and production capabilities.

Strategic Importance of Rare Earth Elements

Rare earth elements are essential for a wide array of high-tech applications, including clean energy technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles, defense equipment, electronics, and industrial applications. Securing access to these minerals is vital for India’s ambitions to enhance self-reliance and reduce dependence on imports from global suppliers.

The Nawatala-Devigarh block’s exploration is expected to contribute significantly to India’s supply of these critical minerals, supporting the country’s industrial growth, clean energy transition, and technological advancements.

CMPDI’s Diversification Beyond Coal

Traditionally focused on coal and lignite, CMPDI has strategically diversified its exploration portfolio to include critical and strategic minerals. The company has successfully completed three bauxite exploration projects and one base metal project involving copper, lead, and zinc. Additionally, CMPDI is actively exploring a magnetite block, underscoring its expanding expertise in non-coal mineral resources.

This diversification aligns with India’s broader National Critical Mineral Mission, which aims to accelerate exploration and development of critical minerals necessary for economic growth and national security.

Boost to India’s Mineral Security

The granting of the exploration license to CMPDI reinforces the government’s efforts to develop a robust domestic supply chain for critical minerals. This move is expected to reduce India’s reliance on imports and enhance the country’s strategic autonomy in key sectors such as defense, technology, and clean energy.

As India intensifies its focus on sustainability and technological innovation, the exploration and utilization of rare earth elements will play a pivotal role in the nation’s economic and industrial future.

About CMPDI

CMPDI, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, plays a key role in planning and designing coal mining operations in India. Recently, it identified over 400 vacant coal mines with potential for water storage, promoting sustainable water use. CMPDI also supports environmental management and resource development in the coal sector.
