Coal India Appoints Chandra Prakash Garg as Executive Director (Safety & Rescue) to Strengthen Mine Safety

New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL), India’s largest coal producer, has announced the appointment of Mr. Chandra Prakash Garg as the Executive Director (Safety & Rescue) in a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE). The appointment is effective from December 26, 2025, and is classified as a senior management role, positioned one level below the Board of Directors, in accordance with SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.

Veteran Mining Professional with 35 Years of Experience

Mr. Chandra Prakash Garg brings over three decades of experience in the coal mining sector to his new role. Since joining Coal India in 1990, he has served in multiple capacities across various underground and open-cast mining operations. His extensive experience in mining operations, hazard management, and emergency response is expected to strengthen CIL’s safety protocols and operational efficiency.

He earned his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Mining from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur, in 1990 and has pursued specialized international training in Safety Management from SIMTARS, Australia, a world-renowned institute for mining safety research and training.

Strategic Role in Safety & Rescue Operations

The Safety & Rescue division at Coal India is crucial for managing the risks associated with large-scale mining operations. As Executive Director, Mr. Garg will focus on:

  • Safety Management Systems (SMS): Implementing advanced hazard identification, risk assessment, and preventive measures to achieve the company’s “Zero Harm” safety objectives.
  • Rescue Operations: Modernizing and overseeing the readiness of mine rescue stations, ensuring rapid and efficient emergency response for both underground and surface mining operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring all CIL subsidiaries strictly adhere to the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) guidelines and other statutory safety requirements.

Corporate Governance and Compliance

This senior management appointment adheres to SEBI’s updated guidelines for disclosure of appointments of key managerial personnel. The promotion/appointment was finalized by CIL’s Board of Directors at its headquarters in Newtown, Rajarhat, Kolkata, ensuring transparency and compliance with corporate governance norms.
