New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), one of India’s leading shipbuilding companies, has signed a shipbuilding contract with Svitzer, a prominent Danish towage operator, for the construction of four fully electric 26-meter ‘TRAnsverse 2600E’ tugs. The agreement, which was finalized on December 5, 2025, includes an option to build up to four additional vessels, strengthening the long-term relationship between the two companies.
The electric tugs, designed to have a 70-ton bollard pull, will be built at CSL’s state-of-the-art facilities in Kochi, Kerala. These vessels are tailored to meet Svitzer’s specifications and will play a pivotal role in the company’s global fleet renewal program and its ongoing shift towards next-generation sustainable towage operations. The delivery of the first tug is expected to take place in late 2027, with subsequent deliveries planned thereafter.

This collaboration is expected to further enhance CSL’s position in the green maritime solutions market, which is rapidly growing in line with global sustainability goals.
Svitzer, part of the Maersk Group, has long been at the forefront of advancing eco-friendly maritime technologies. The development of these fully electric tugs reflects its commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the towage sector while aligning with global environmental standards.
