On the occasion of the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) 87th Raising Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings and praised the force for its vital role in maintaining the country’s internal security.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Raising Day wishes to all CRPF personnel. This force has played a vital role in our security apparatus, especially in challenging aspects relating to internal security.” He lauded the CRPF’s dedication, courage, and resilience, saying their service in the most demanding situations stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment. “Their contribution in overcoming humanitarian challenges is also commendable,” he added.
Founded on July 27, 1939, as the Crown Representative’s Police, the force was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force in 1949 following the enactment of the CRPF Act. Over the decades, it has evolved into the country’s largest paramilitary force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, playing a key role in counter-insurgency operations, border security, and disaster response.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also saluted the CRPF’s valour. In a message on X, he said, “Heartfelt greetings to all CRPF personnel on their Raising Day. Your selfless sacrifices have been the backbone of our nation’s security, and your unwavering courage to end Naxalism is truly commendable.”
He further praised the force for standing firm against every challenge. “A proud salute to the martyrs of CRPF. Your legacy of valour continues to inspire the nation,” Shah stated.
The CRPF, in its own tribute, posted: “On 27th July, we celebrate 86 glorious years of bold courage, supreme sacrifice, and resolute commitment, deeply inscribed in the legacy of the nation’s security and service.”
The force’s roots also trace back to the 1936 Madras Resolution passed by the All India Congress Committee, which emphasised the need for a strong internal security mechanism. This vision took shape under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then India’s Home Minister, who championed the establishment of a robust and flexible security force for the newly independent nation.
The CRPF today also reflects the growing role of women in India’s security landscape, being the only paramilitary force in the country with six all-women battalions. The first, the 88 (M) Battalion, was raised in 1986 and is headquartered in Delhi.
With its deep legacy of bravery and service, the CRPF continues to remain a cornerstone of India’s internal security framework.
