The Central CEN cybercrime police have launched an investigation after fraudsters allegedly posed as a senior IAS officer to solicit money from government staff via WhatsApp.
A complaint filed by Kishore R from the Department of Industries and Commerce revealed that several employees received WhatsApp messages on Monday from a number bearing Vietnam’s country code (+84). The profile on the app carried the name and photo of Gunjan Krishna, 51, the department’s commissioner.
According to the FIR, the sender—posing as Krishna—attempted to extract money through these deceptive messages. The complainant confirmed that the number was fake and had no connection to the officer.
Police have registered a case under Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, which deals with identity theft, and are currently tracing the origin of the messages.
