Kathua: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched key welfare schemes for BSF personnel during his visit to the Hiranagar sector along the International Border in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir. The initiatives aim to improve the lives of the forces guarding the frontier and strengthen India’s border security infrastructure. These measures come at a time of heightened focus on combating cross-border threats and ensuring the safety of border communities.

Background of BSF Welfare Schemes in Kathua

On February 6, 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu to begin his two-day official visit to Jammu & Kashmir. The Home Minister was received by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha upon arrival, and the schedule placed significant emphasis on both welfare and security concerns along the India-Pakistan International Border.

BSF Welfare Schemes: Improving Life on the Border

During his visit, Mr. Amit Shah e-inaugurated and laid the foundation for six welfare schemes for BSF personnel posted in the Hiranagar sector. These schemes are designed to elevate troop comfort, support infrastructure, and provide better facilities for the frontline forces.

The schemes are focused on:

  • Enhancing living conditions of BSF personnel.
  • Upgrading basic infrastructure at forward Border Outposts.
  • Encouraging welfare measures for jawans and their families.

Officials said the initiatives are expected to bring long-term improvements in life and duty conditions for BSF troops who serve in challenging environments along the border.

Interaction with BSF Troops at Forward Outposts

Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally visited key border outposts — Gurnam and Bobiyian — in the Hiranagar sector. He interacted with BSF officers and jawans, gathering direct feedback on border operations and conditions on the ground.

These interactions highlighted the concerns and aspirations of the force deployed at the International Border, including challenges related to harsh weather, terrain, and constant vigilance required to deter infiltration attempts.

High-Level Security Review in Jammu

After visiting the forward areas, Mr. Shah chaired a comprehensive high-level security review meeting at Lok Bhawan in Jammu. The session focused on border security, internal security challenges, and strategies to combat threats from cross-border terrorism and smuggling.

The meeting was attended by:

  • Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha
  • Officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs
  • Army and BSF leadership
  • Intelligence and paramilitary officials

Officials discussed the latest border management challenges and reviewed measures to strengthen intelligence and operational coordination in the region.

Martyr Families and Compassionate Appointments

In the afternoon session, Mr. Amit Shah distributed compassionate appointment letters to the families of BSF martyrs. This initiative aims to provide financial support and employment opportunities to the families who lost their loved ones in the line of duty.

Interaction with the bereaved families was noted as a key part of the visit, reflecting the government’s commitment to the welfare of forces and their next of kin.
