Explained: How HAL Dual-Rail ASRAAM Launcher Makes Tejas Mk1A More Powerful

New Delhi: HAL dual-rail ASRAAM launcher has successfully completed qualification trials for the Tejas Mk1A fighter jet, marking another major achievement for India’s defence industry. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) confirmed that the aircraft passed both single and twin ASRAAM firing trials after important wing modifications. The new launcher allows Tejas Mk1A to carry two ASRAAM missiles on one wing station, giving the Indian Air Force more firepower and greater mission flexibility.

HAL Successfully Qualifies Dual-Rail ASRAAM Launcher

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has officially qualified the new dual-rail launcher for the Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) on the Tejas Mk1A. The achievement was confirmed by Sumana Prakash, General Manager at HAL’s Aircraft Research and Design Centre (ARDC), during an interview with Zone Victor Aerospace & Defence.

According to HAL, the aircraft successfully completed all required single and twin missile firing trials using the newly developed launcher.

What Is the HAL Dual-Rail ASRAAM Launcher

The Dual-Rail ASRAAM Launcher is a newly designed weapon pylon developed for the Tejas Mk1A. Earlier, one wing station could carry only one ASRAAM missile. Now, the same station can carry two ASRAAM missiles at the same time. This means the fighter jet can carry more short-range air-to-air missiles without losing space for other weapons. Simply put, Tejas Mk1A becomes more powerful without adding extra weapon stations.

Why Is This Upgrade Important

The new launcher gives the Indian Air Force more flexibility during combat missions. Since one station now carries two ASRAAM missiles, the other hardpoints can carry:

  • Astra Mk1 Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles
  • Smart bombs
  • Precision-guided weapons
  • Electronic Warfare (EW) pods
  • External fuel tanks

This allows the aircraft to perform different mission types without compromising air-to-air combat capability.

HAL Made Important Wing Modifications

Adding two missiles on one pylon increases weight and aerodynamic stress. To handle these extra forces, HAL engineers strengthened the aircraft’s wing structure. The modifications include:

  • Reinforced wing attachment points
  • Stronger internal support structure
  • Upgraded mechanical launcher system
  • Improved electrical wiring for safe missile release

HAL has not revealed the detailed design because of security reasons.

HAL Dual-Rail ASRAAM Launcher: Twin Firing Trials Were Successful

HAL carried out extensive testing before approving the new launcher. The testing included:

  • Single missile launch
  • Twin missile launch from the same pylon
  • Safe missile separation
  • Launcher performance checks
  • Aircraft integration tests
  • Flight safety validation

All trials were completed successfully. This confirms the launcher is ready for operational use.

What Is ASRAAM

The Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) is one of the world’s most advanced close-combat missiles. It is manufactured by MBDA UK and supported in India by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

  • Speed greater than Mach 3
  • Range of over 25 km
  • Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker
  • High agility during dogfights
  • Excellent performance against highly manoeuvring targets

When combined with the Tejas Mk1A’s Uttam AESA radar, Electronic Warfare Suite and Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS), ASRAAM becomes an even more effective close-range weapon.
