Nashik: HAL revives Su-30MKI production at Nashik as India moves to strengthen the operational strength of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has restarted production of the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft at its Nashik facility, with 12 new jets scheduled for delivery by 2029. The project is part of India’s broader effort to enhance defence preparedness while increasing indigenous content in military platforms.

The development follows a contract signed in December 2024 for the production of 12 additional Su-30MKI aircraft to replace fighter jets lost in accidents. The new aircraft will feature more than 50% indigenous content, marking another step toward India’s self-reliance goals in defence manufacturing.

Why Has HAL Restarted Su-30MKI Production

The Indian Air Force continues to rely heavily on the Su-30MKI as its primary air superiority fighter. To maintain fleet strength and operational readiness, the government approved the procurement of 12 additional aircraft.

The ₹11,000 crore contract allows HAL to manufacture the jets under licence while incorporating a significantly higher share of Indian-made components. The move also helps sustain India’s fighter aircraft manufacturing ecosystem and supports long-term modernization plans.

Su-30MKI Production: Nashik Facility to Play a Key Role

HAL’s Nashik facility has been the backbone of Su-30MKI production in India for many years. The facility has already manufactured more than 220 Su-30MKI fighter jets for the Indian Air Force under licence from Russia.

Apart from producing the Su-30MKI, the Nashik plant is also involved in manufacturing indigenous defence platforms, including the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme.

Delivery Timeline for New Su-30MKI Jets

According to current plans, the first newly built Su-30MKI fighter jet is expected to be delivered during 2027-28. All 12 aircraft are scheduled to be supplied to the Indian Air Force by 2029. The project will help replace aircraft lost in previous accidents and ensure that squadron strength remains stable.

Major Upgrade Planned for Existing Su-30MKI Fleet

Along with new production, HAL is expected to undertake a major modernization programme for the existing Su-30MKI fleet. The proposed upgrade programme is estimated to cost around ₹60,000 crore and could be implemented with support from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The modernization aims to significantly improve the aircraft’s combat effectiveness, detection range, and survivability.

Su-30MKI Production: What New Technologies Will Be Added?

The upgrade programme is expected to be carried out in two phases.

Phase One: Advanced Avionics and Radar

The first phase will focus on:

  • New-generation avionics.
  • Improved flight control systems.
  • Advanced indigenous radar systems.
  • Better target detection and tracking capabilities.

The new radar is expected to allow pilots to identify and engage targets at much greater distances than current systems.

Phase Two: Electronic Warfare and Sensors

The second phase is likely to introduce:

  • Advanced electronic warfare systems.
  • Improved infrared search-and-track (IRST) systems.
  • Enhanced threat detection capabilities.
  • Better protection against incoming enemy threats.

These upgrades are designed to improve the aircraft’s ability to operate in modern battlefield environments.

Indigenous Content Crosses 50%

One of the most important aspects of the new production batch is the increase in indigenous content.

HAL plans to use a larger number of Indian-made components sourced from domestic defence companies. Several major systems and sub-components are expected to come from India’s growing private defence sector.

This aligns with the government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, which seeks to reduce dependence on foreign defence imports.

Why the Su-30MKI Remains Important for India

The Su-30MKI continues to be the backbone of the Indian Air Force. Known for its long range, heavy payload capacity, and multi-role combat capability, the aircraft remains one of the most capable fighter jets in India’s inventory. The planned upgrades are expected to keep the platform combat-relevant for many years while enhancing its effectiveness against emerging threats.
