New Delhi: AL-31FP engine life extension has received a major boost after Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) successfully increased the Total Technical Life (TTL) of the AL-31FP engine from 2,000 flying hours to 2,500 flying hours. The milestone is expected to improve the availability of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Su-30MKI fighter fleet, reduce maintenance requirements, and strengthen India’s defence readiness. The development is based on HAL’s engineering work and aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s efforts to increase indigenous capability.

What Is the AL-31FP Engine

The AL-31FP is a twin-spool afterburning turbofan engine that powers the Su-30MKI, the Indian Air Force’s frontline air superiority fighter. The engine is manufactured by HAL’s Koraput Division in Odisha under a technology transfer arrangement. It produces up to 12,500 kgf of thrust with afterburner and is equipped with thrust-vectoring nozzles, giving the Su-30MKI excellent manoeuvrability.

Details of HAL AL-31FP Engine Life Extension

HAL has successfully extended the Total Technical Life (TTL) of the AL-31FP engine from 2,000 hours to 2,500 hours. This means each engine can safely remain in service for 500 additional flying hours before retirement, reducing the need for frequent engine replacements and major overhauls. The first upgraded engine was overhauled and handed over to the Indian Air Force under the new life-extension programme.

Why HAL AL-31FP Engine Life Extension Is Important

The longer engine life will bring several operational benefits to the Indian Air Force. These include:

  • Higher availability of Su-30MKI fighter jets
  • Fewer engine replacements
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Better mission readiness
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Reduced downtime for aircraft

With more aircraft available for operations, the IAF can maintain a stronger combat presence during both peacetime and emergencies.

A Big Boost for the Su-30MKI Fleet

The Su-30MKI is the backbone of the Indian Air Force, with around 260 aircraft in service. The fleet is expected to remain operational well into the 2030s while undergoing the planned “Super Sukhoi” modernisation programme, which will include upgraded avionics, electronic warfare systems, radar, and indigenous weapons. The extended engine life complements these upgrades by allowing aircraft to remain operational for longer periods.

HAL’s Koraput Division Played a Key Role

The AL-31FP engines are manufactured and overhauled at HAL’s Koraput Division in Odisha. Over the years, HAL has developed strong expertise in manufacturing, repairing, and overhauling these engines, supporting India’s goal of increasing self-reliance in defence production.

HAL AL-31FP Engine Life Extension: Linked to the ₹26,000 Crore Engine Programme

In September 2024, the Government of India approved the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero engines from HAL for the Su-30MKI fleet at a cost of over ₹26,000 crore. The engines are being manufactured under the Buy (Indian) category, with indigenous content planned to increase beyond 54%, supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

What Is Total Technical Life (TTL)

Total Technical Life (TTL) is the maximum certified flying life of an aircraft engine before it must be permanently retired. By extending the TTL from 2,000 hours to 2,500 hours, HAL has increased the engine’s usable service life by 25%, allowing the Indian Air Force to get more operational value from every engine.

What This Means for India’s Defence

The successful life extension shows India’s growing capability in military engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). It also reduces dependence on foreign support, strengthens indigenous aerospace expertise, and improves the long-term sustainability of one of India’s most important fighter aircraft fleets.
