New Delhi: The Indian Air Force’s Vayu Shakti 2026 exercise is set to become one of the largest aerial combat drills in recent years, showcasing India’s air combat prowess and operational readiness close to the India-Pakistan border.

Positioned at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, this high-intensity live fire exercise will bring together frontline fighter jets such as Rafale, Su-30MKI and Tejas in coordinated missions that simulate real combat scenarios.

What Is Vayu Shakti 2026?

Vayu Shakti is a triennial air power exercise conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to validate the force’s readiness, precision strike capability, and joint operational superiority. It focuses on evaluating full-spectrum air combat operations spanning day and night missions, live weapon engagements, and rapid deployment exercises.

Unlike routine drills, Vayu Shakti 2026 will include live armament firing sessions, electronic warfare strategies, and precision strike simulations at multiple altitudes, ranging from ground level to high-altitude combat spaces.

Strategic Location: Pokhran Range, Rajasthan

The exercise is scheduled at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, a vast and secure area in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, just a few kilometres from the India-Pakistan border. Its geographic positioning provides optimal space for high-impact aerial manoeuvres and live fire drills, making it an ideal venue for evaluating combat effectiveness in realistic war-like conditions.

The choice of Pokhran also underscores the IAF’s focus on enhancing strategic deterrence and quick response capabilities along the western front.

Participation Highlights: Frontline Jets and Platforms

Vayu Shakti 2026 is expected to bring together India’s most powerful combat aircraft:

Rafale Fighter Jets

French-built Rafales will demonstrate long-range precision strikes and multirole capabilities — reflecting India’s advancing aerospace integration and tactical flexibility in complex scenarios.

Su-30MKI Heavy Fighters

These heavy twin-engine jets will undertake air superiority missions and deep-strike operations, reinforcing the IAF’s edge in both offensive and defensive air power.

Tejas Light Combat Aircraft

The indigenously built HAL Tejas showcases India’s push for self-reliance in defence production. Tejas will participate in combat missions involving precision-guided bombs and dynamic strike profiles.

Additional Aircraft & Assets

Other platforms like Mirage-2000, MiG-29 and Jaguar jets, along with transport and helicopter squadrons, will support joint missions that involve air-to-air, air-to-ground, and tactical insertion operations.

Vayu Shakti 2026: Live Fire and Combat Simulations

One of the defining features of this exercise is live armament firing — where jets will release live munitions against simulated targets. This is aimed at assessing weapon delivery precision, target acquisition speed, and integrated sensor-to-shooter response times under operational stress.

Such drills are designed to seamlessly blend offensive air strikes with defence measures, electronic warfare and integrated mission control operations.

Importance of Vayu Shakti 2026

The geopolitical context of rising tensions in South Asia places importance on showcasing rapid air response capabilities and deterrence. Conducting Vayu Shakti 2026 near the western border sends a clear strategic signal: the Indian Air Force remains ready to defend the nation’s aerial boundaries and swiftly counter any threat.

Beyond conventional drills, this exercise reinforces interoperability between different aircraft types, airborne defence systems, and ground coordination units — a vital component of modern high-intensity conflict readiness.

Vayu Shakti 2026 Schedule

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has been issued by aviation authorities, indicating restricted airspaces around the Pokhran range from February 9 to February 28, 2026 due to heightened military activity.

These phased windows allow the IAF to conduct a wide array of missions, from tactical sorties to integrated multi-platform engagements, without civilian air traffic interference.
