New Delhi: The Indian Army advanced night and thermal weapon sights programme has moved forward with the issuance of a Request for Information (RFI) for modern optical systems for frontline infantry weapons. The proposed procurement includes Image Intensification (II) sights and Thermal Imaging sights for the SIG-716 rifle, Negev Light Machine Gun (LMG), and AK-203 assault rifle. The initiative is aimed at improving the Army’s combat effectiveness during night operations and in low-visibility environments while supporting India’s defence modernization and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals.

Why the New Weapon Sights Are Important
Modern conflicts increasingly require soldiers to operate in darkness, fog, smoke and other challenging conditions. Image Intensification sights amplify available light, allowing troops to identify targets at night.
Thermal Imaging sights detect heat signatures, helping soldiers locate hidden or camouflaged targets even in complete darkness. Together, these systems provide a significant advantage in surveillance, target acquisition and engagement.

The SIG-716 rifle has already been inducted in large numbers by the Indian Army and is widely used by frontline units. The Negev LMG provides squad-level firepower and supports infantry operations with sustained suppressive fire. The AK-203 assault rifle, being manufactured in India under the India-Russia partnership, is expected to become one of the Army’s primary close-combat weapons. Equipping these weapons with advanced optics will improve accuracy, lethality and situational awareness.

The procurement is expected to be processed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. This category prioritizes indigenous design, development and manufacturing while ensuring a significant level of domestic content. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programmes for defence production.
Existing Night Vision Efforts
The Ministry of Defence has already taken several steps to improve night-fighting capabilities across the armed forces. Indian defence companies have been increasingly involved in producing night vision systems, thermal imagers and electro-optical equipment for military use. The latest RFI is expected to create new opportunities for domestic defence manufacturers and MSMEs working in the defence electronics sector.

According to the RFI, the new sights are expected to offer long service life, reliability and high operational performance. The systems will support both close-quarter combat and long-range target engagement under low-light conditions.
For SIG-716 users, the sights are expected to enable accurate target engagement at extended distances during night operations. For Negev LMG crews, the systems will enhance fire control and sustained combat effectiveness. For AK-203 operators, thermal and night sights will improve close-combat performance and battlefield awareness.
