New Delhi: 10 frontline Indian navy warships are being fitted with Bharat Electronics Limited‘s (BEL) Advanced Composite Communication System (ACCS).

This modernization effort is designed to improve how warships communicate, share information, and coordinate operations at sea. The move is part of India’s broader push to build a more connected and technologically advanced naval force.

The upgrade will help naval vessels exchange voice, data, and operational information faster and more securely during missions. This is especially important in modern naval warfare, where quick decisions can make a significant difference.

What Is The BEL Advanced Composite Communication System

The Advanced Composite Communication System (ACCS) is a next-generation communication network developed by Bharat Electronics Limited. It combines multiple communication channels into a single integrated system.

Instead of relying on separate networks for different tasks, ships can communicate through one unified platform. The system supports:

  • Ship-to-ship communication
  • Ship-to-shore communication
  • Ship-to-air communication
  • Secure voice transmission
  • Data sharing
  • Video communication

This allows naval commanders to receive and share critical information in real time.

Which Warships Are Being Upgraded with BEL Advanced Composite Communication System

The modernization program covers ten important warships from different classes. These include frigates, destroyers, corvettes, and patrol vessels that continue to play a key role in India’s maritime security.

According to reports, the vessels include ships from the Talwar, Rajput, Kora, Khukri, and Saryu classes, among others. The upgrade ensures that older and mid-generation warships can work seamlessly alongside newer naval platforms.

Why BEL Advanced Composite Communication System Upgrades Matter

Many of these ships were commissioned years ago and still possess strong combat capabilities. However, modern naval operations require much faster communication, better coordination, and seamless information sharing. By installing ACCS, the Indian Navy is extending the operational effectiveness of these vessels without replacing them entirely.

How Will The New System Improve Naval Operations

The biggest advantage of the new communication system is speed. Older communication networks often operate through separate channels and technologies. The ACCS integrates them into one digital architecture, reducing delays and improving coordination.

Faster Information Sharing

Modern naval operations depend heavily on real-time information. Warships must constantly exchange intelligence, surveillance data, and operational updates. The upgraded system enables faster transfer of information between ships and command centers.

Better Fleet Coordination

A naval fleet works best when every vessel has access to the same information. The ACCS creates a common communication framework, helping ships coordinate movements and missions more effectively.

Enhanced Reliability

The system is designed to provide stable and secure communications even in challenging environments. This reliability is essential during long-range deployments and high-intensity maritime operations.

Strengthening Network-Centric Warfare Capabilities

Modern militaries increasingly rely on what is known as network-centric warfare. In simple terms, this means connecting platforms, sensors, commanders, and weapons through digital networks so everyone can access the same information quickly.

The Indian Navy has been steadily investing in technologies that improve connectivity across its fleet. Recent efforts to develop indigenous satellite communication systems further highlight this strategy. The ACCS upgrade fits perfectly into this vision by making communication faster, smarter, and more integrated.

Boost For Indigenous Defence Technology

Another important aspect of this project is its focus on indigenous technology. Bharat Electronics Limited is one of India’s leading defence electronics companies and has developed several advanced systems for the armed forces.

Using domestically developed communication systems reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and supports the government’s vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Recent defence procurement decisions have also emphasized sourcing equipment from Indian industry.
