New Delhi: INS Nipun has officially joined the Indian Navy, marking a major boost to India’s underwater warfare and submarine rescue capabilities. During the commissioning ceremony in Mumbai, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan highlighted that maritime threats are constantly changing and becoming more complex, making preparedness a top priority for the Navy.

The induction of INS Nipun comes at a time when regional security challenges and global maritime tensions are increasing. The vessel is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing India’s operational readiness in deep-sea and underwater missions.

Preparedness Remains Navy’s Highest Priority

The Navy Chief emphasized that combat readiness remains the Indian Navy’s foremost responsibility. He stated that while future threats cannot always be predicted accurately, the country can prepare itself by developing capabilities that allow quick and effective responses whenever challenges arise.

What Is INS Nipun

INS Nipun is India’s second indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV). The vessel is part of the Nistar-class and has been developed to support deep-sea diving, underwater intervention, salvage operations, and submarine rescue missions. Its commissioning strengthens India’s indigenous naval capabilities and supports the government’s focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

What are the Key Features Of INS Nipun

The 9,000-tonne vessel is equipped with advanced systems designed for specialized underwater operations. Some of its major capabilities include:

  • Saturation diving systems
  • Dynamic positioning system
  • Diving compression chambers
  • Self-propelled hyperbaric lifeboats
  • Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)
  • Ability to operate the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV)

These technologies make INS Nipun one of the most capable platforms in the Indian Navy’s underwater fleet.

Western Naval Command To Operate INS Nipun

The Navy Chief announced that INS Nipun will be based on India’s west coast under the Western Naval Command. The vessel will contribute to specialized underwater operations and deepwater missions across multiple domains. Its deployment on the western seaboard is expected to improve India’s maritime response capability in a strategically important region.

Growing Regional Security Concerns

Admiral Swaminathan pointed to ongoing geopolitical tensions and challenges affecting maritime security. He noted that instability in West Asia, threats to global shipping routes, and accelerated military modernization by several countries have increased the need for stronger maritime preparedness.

INS Nipun Commissioning Major Boost For Submarine Rescue Operations

One of INS Nipun’s most important roles will be submarine rescue. The vessel can embark and operate the Indian Navy’s Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel, allowing faster response to submarine emergencies. This capability significantly improves India’s ability to assist distressed submarines, whether Indian or belonging to friendly partner nations.

India Emerging As A Regional Rescue Partner

The Navy Chief said INS Nipun could help India become a reliable submarine rescue partner in the region. Its specialized diving and salvage capabilities can also support friendly countries during underwater recovery operations, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief missions.

Indigenous Capability Gets Another Boost

INS Nipun was built in India and represents another important achievement for the country’s defence manufacturing sector. The vessel demonstrates India’s growing ability to design and construct advanced naval platforms capable of supporting complex maritime operations.
