New Delhi: India has achieved a major milestone in naval aviation as the Rafale Marine fighter jet successfully made its maiden landing on INS Vikrant on October 29, 2026. The successful landing marks an important step towards introducing the French-made fighter aircraft into the Indian Navy.
The ongoing trials will help the Navy check the aircraft’s ability to operate from India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier and strengthen the country’s maritime defence capabilities.
Details of Rafale Landing On INS Vikrant
The Rafale Marine fighter aircraft successfully landed on board INS Vikrant on its first attempt during ongoing trials on October 29, 2026.
The Indian Navy confirmed the development on October 30, describing the achievement as an important first step towards operationalising the aircraft in the Navy.
The landing is significant because operating a fighter jet from an aircraft carrier requires special technology, careful testing and modifications to ensure safe take-off and landing operations. The trials are being conducted to check the aircraft’s compatibility with INS Vikrant and its carrier-based operating systems.
Why is Rafale Landing On INS Vikrant Important
INS Vikrant is India’s first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier. Unlike conventional military airbases, an aircraft carrier has a limited flight deck.
Therefore, fighter aircraft operating from these ships need special features to take off and land safely.
INS Vikrant uses the STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) system. Under this system, fighter aircraft take off using a ski-jump ramp at the front of the carrier. During landing, a special hook fitted to the aircraft catches arresting wires on the flight deck and helps stop the aircraft within a short distance.
The Rafale Marine has been designed for carrier-based operations. Its successful landing on INS Vikrant is an important step in validating its compatibility with the Indian carrier’s operating system.
Earlier Rafale Marine Trials Were Conducted In Goa
Before the landing on INS Vikrant, the Indian Navy conducted trials of the Rafale Marine fighter aircraft at a Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) in Goa.
This facility is designed to recreate important features of an aircraft carrier’s flight deck.
It helps engineers and pilots test aircraft take-offs, landings and other carrier-related requirements before conducting operations from an actual aircraft carrier. These earlier trials helped prepare the aircraft for testing on INS Vikrant.
The latest successful landing represents progress in the process of integrating the Rafale Marine into the Indian Navy.
What Is Rafale Marine Fighter Aircraft
The Rafale Marine, also known as Rafale-M, is a naval fighter aircraft developed by French aerospace company Dassault Aviation.
It is specially designed to operate from aircraft carriers and perform multiple military missions at sea.
Unlike conventional land-based fighter aircraft, the Rafale Marine has special features that allow it to operate from the limited space available on an aircraft carrier. Some of its important features include:
1. Special Landing System
The aircraft has reinforced landing gear and a tailhook.
The tailhook catches special arresting wires installed on an aircraft carrier’s flight deck. This allows the aircraft to stop safely within a short distance.
2. Advanced Radar And Electronic Warfare Systems
The Rafale Marine is equipped with advanced radar and electronic warfare technologies.
These systems help pilots detect potential threats, track enemy aircraft and improve their awareness during combat operations.
3. Multiple Combat Capabilities
The aircraft is designed to perform several important military missions, including:
- Air defence and air superiority.
- Maritime strike operations.
- Reconnaissance missions.
- Ground and shore attacks.
- Protection of naval vessels against aerial threats.
4. Advanced Weapons
The Rafale Marine can carry different types of modern weapons, including Meteor and MICA air-to-air missiles, SCALP cruise missiles and Exocet anti-ship missiles.
These weapons provide the aircraft with capabilities to engage different types of targets.
