Rabat / New: In a landmark development for India’s defence export ambitions and strategic engagement with Africa, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has officially handed over the first batch of Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8 vehicles to the Royal Moroccan Army under a multi-year defence supply contract.
This milestone represents a significant stride in bilateral defence ties between India and Morocco, signalling not only the operational success of an indigenous armoured platform but also the emergence of Made-in-India manufactured defence systems on the global stage.

The vehicle handover comes nearly a year after the signing of a landmark contract in September 2024, under which TASL will supply a total of 150 WhAP 8×8 armoured vehicles over the next three years.

Central to this agreement is Morocco’s hosting of a state-of-the-art defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, near Casablanca — the first overseas defence production plant established by an Indian private company on the African continent.

The 20,000-square-metre facility, inaugurated on September 23, 2025 by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Morocco’s Minister Delegate for National Defence Abdelatif Loudyi, became operational three months ahead of schedule, enabling early deliveries this year.

The WhAP 8×8 armoured vehicle is a modular wheeled combat platform jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Tata Advanced Systems Limited.
Designed for versatility, the WhAP 8×8 platform excels in multiple operational roles — including infantry transport, reconnaissance, command and control, mortar carrier, ambulance, and specialised CBRN reconnaissance missions.

Modular Structure: Adaptable to mission needs with scalable protection and armament variants.
Survivable Design: Monocoque hull with blast-resistant features, double V-shaped floor, energy-absorbing seats, and composite spall liners.
Mobility & Speed: 8×8 hydro-pneumatic suspension, central tyre inflation system, and a 600 hp engine enable speeds up to 100+ km/h on road and amphibious capability up to 10 km/h.
Armament Options: Remote-controlled weapon stations with machine guns or 30 mm autocannons, and optional anti-tank guided missiles.
Crew & Capacity: Three crew members plus up to eight troops, with advanced navigation, communications, NBC protection, and night-vision systems.
