New Delhi: Delhi is set to strengthen its electric public transport system with the addition of 200 new electric buses this month, as the government accelerates efforts to promote clean and sustainable mobility in the national capital.
The announcement came during a review meeting chaired by Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, with senior officials from the Transport Department and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) assessing progress on electric bus deployment, charging infrastructure, and other key transport projects.
Delhi’s Electric Bus Fleet to Reach 7,500 by Year-End
Officials informed the minister that Delhi currently operates over 4,000 electric buses, making it one of the largest EV bus fleets in India. With ongoing procurement, the fleet is expected to grow to 7,500 buses by the end of 2026, significantly enhancing the city’s clean and efficient public transport network.
Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said, “Delhi is steadily strengthening its electric bus fleet to build a cleaner, stronger, and more efficient public transport system.” He added that expanding the EV fleet remains a priority under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aimed at providing sustainable and commuter-friendly transport solutions.

EV Charging Infrastructure and Depot Expansion
The meeting also reviewed infrastructure preparedness for electric mobility. Officials noted:
- EV charging infrastructure is already established in 44 bus depots across Delhi.
- Additional charging facilities are under development in 36 depots as part of PM e-Drive Phase I and II initiatives.
- Feasibility studies are underway for a new DTC depot along Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and upgrading the Burari depot.
- Automated testing stations are expected to become operational at Nand Nagri and Tehkhand in April.
New Interstate Bus Terminal at Bhalswa
The government is planning to develop a new interstate bus terminal in Bhalswa on approximately 20 acres of reclaimed landfill land, which is expected to improve interstate connectivity in North Delhi and ease congestion at existing terminals.
Previous Initiatives and Government Milestones
The expansion follows the launch of 500 EV buses in February 2026, marking the first year of the BJP-led Delhi government. During the launch, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, and BJP National President Nitin Nabin, flagged off the buses and launched the Delhi-Panipat bus service.
CM Gupta highlighted that the government is fulfilling its development promises after years of neglect, focusing on basic amenities and improved transport infrastructure for Delhi residents.
Benefits for Commuters
The new ramps, bus depots, and charging infrastructure aim to:
- Improve public transport efficiency
- Reduce pollution and traffic congestion
- Provide better connectivity across Delhi and neighboring regions
- Support Delhi’s transition to sustainable and clean mobility
