Delhi: The Delhi government is accelerating efforts to expand its Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network, aiming to reduce reliance on LPG cylinders and provide clean fuel access to more households. Currently, the city supports around 18 lakh PNG connections, of which approximately 14 lakh are active. Officials are now focusing on bridging this gap and expanding the network to areas still heavily dependent on LPG.
Monthly PNG Connections to Increase from 10,000 to 25,000
At present, around 10,000 new PNG connections are being added monthly in Delhi. Authorities now plan to scale this up to 25,000 connections per month to accelerate distribution. To support this goal, a door-to-door awareness campaign is being planned, particularly targeting neighborhoods where pipeline usage remains low.
Energy Minister Ashish Sood emphasized that obtaining a PNG connection should be “simple, transparent, and citizen-friendly”. Officials are also streamlining the application process to make connection approvals faster and more efficient.
Focus on Unauthorized Colonies and Developing Areas
Special attention will be given to unauthorized settlements and rural outskirts where PNG infrastructure is still under development. Challenges remain in densely populated areas with narrow lanes and high-rise buildings, which make pipeline installation difficult. Efforts are underway to resolve connectivity and logistical issues in these zones to ensure smooth distribution.
PNG Expansion Beyond Residential Areas
The Delhi government is also exploring PNG supply for public and commercial facilities. Plans include connecting:
- Night shelters and midday meal kitchens
- Atal Canteens and other public institutions run by the Municipal Corporation
- Restaurants, hotels, and religious establishments
Officials highlight that PNG provides continuous gas supply, eliminating the need for frequent cylinder refills, offering a more convenient and efficient energy solution for both households and commercial users.
Government Commitment to Clean Energy Access
The initiative is part of Delhi’s broader push toward clean energy, aiming to make PNG a reliable alternative to LPG across the city. By expanding infrastructure, streamlining processes, and raising awareness, the government is working to ensure that more citizens can access sustainable, safe, and convenient energy for their daily needs.
