EDFC/Ambala: In a striking demonstration of vigilance and technology-driven enforcement, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) security team successfully busted an organized gang involved in the theft of Elastic Rail Clips (ERCs) in the Ambala section of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The operation led to the arrest of four accused and helped avert a potential major rail safety hazard.
Swift Action by DFCCIL Security Team
The operation was spearheaded by Ashish Mishra, GGM (Security), EDFC, and his team, who resolved the case within 24 hours, showcasing exceptional coordination, preparedness, and decisive action.
During the last week of December 2025, repeated incidents of ERC theft were reported in the New Jaroda Nara–New Mansurpur section under the Ambala Unit. ERCs are critical components for track stability and safe train operations, and their removal poses serious safety risks.

Theft Detected Through Vigilance
The first theft occurred on the night of 27–28 December 2025, when 309 ERCs were stolen from the track. Upon receiving information, the DFCCIL security team launched an intensive search operation and recovered the stolen material from a nearby sugarcane field, preventing any immediate danger to railway operations.
Anticipating a repeat attempt, the team devised a preventive strategy leveraging GPS technology.
GPS Trap Leads to Real-Time Tracking and Arrests
In a proactive move, GPS trackers were concealed inside two bags of ERCs and placed back at the vulnerable location for continuous digital surveillance. On the night of 30–31 December, thieves struck again, stealing 486 ERCs and temporarily hiding them under a DFCCIL culvert.
Unaware of the GPS-enabled bags, the culprits were tracked in real time. Acting swiftly, the security team, in coordination with local police, intercepted a tractor-trolley carrying the stolen ERCs, arresting three accused on the spot. Further investigation led to the arrest of another individual receiving the stolen material, bringing the total arrests to four.

Awareness Drives and Strengthened Coordination
Following the arrests, DFCCIL launched awareness campaigns in nearby villages, educating residents about the dangers and legal consequences of railway property theft. Villagers were advised to maintain a safe distance from railway tracks and refrain from tampering with or stealing railway equipment, which constitutes a punishable offence.
A coordination meeting with SSP Muzaffarnagar and Range Police officers was held to further enhance track security, identify vulnerable “black spot” areas, strengthen preventive patrolling, and improve railway–police collaboration.
Technology Integration Boosts Railway Safety
Mr. Ashish Mishra highlighted similar recent successes where GPS tracking technology helped prevent theft of signalling equipment near Ambala and Saharanpur.
DFCCIL officials emphasized that the operation sends a strong message of zero tolerance toward theft or sabotage of railway assets. The integration of technology, vigilance, and inter-agency coordination has significantly strengthened the safety framework of the Dedicated Freight Corridor.
