Shillong: The Meghalaya government has officially announced that Chief Secretary Donald Philip Wahlang (IAS:1993:AM) will retire from service on September 30, 2025, marking the end of a significant tenure at the helm of the state’s bureaucracy.
IAS Wahlang has served as Chief Secretary since August 1, 2022, succeeding Rebecca V. Suchiang (IAS:1989:AM), and has been credited with steering crucial governance initiatives during a dynamic period for the state.

An IAS officer of the 1993 batch (Assam-Meghalaya cadre), Wahlang took charge as Chief Secretary at a time when Meghalaya was undergoing major administrative and developmental shifts. With Wahlang’s retirement approaching, attention has turned to his likely successor. According to top government sources, Shakil P. Ahammed (IAS:1995:AM), the current Additional Chief Secretary, is being seen as the leading candidate for the role of the next Chief Secretary of Meghalaya.
Ahammed currently holds multiple key portfolios–

- Water Resources Department
- Chairman, Board of Revenue
His administrative experience and familiarity with Meghalaya’s governance structure make him a strong contender for the top bureaucratic post.
