In a major step towards infrastructure modernisation and financial self-reliance, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has approved the commercial redevelopment of its Banda Bahadur Marg and Sukhdev Vihar bus depots in collaboration with state-owned Engineering Projects India Ltd (EPIL).
The initiative, expected to generate around ₹2,616 crore, will see the revenue reinvested in upgrading DTC’s transit facilities. The project adopts a self-sustaining model with zero financial burden on DTC.
EPIL, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, had submitted the proposal in October 2024, followed by a detailed roadmap in November. According to the plan, the Banda Bahadur Marg redevelopment is estimated to generate ₹1,858 crore and will be completed in 28 months. The Sukhdev Vihar depot is projected to yield ₹758 crore, with completion targeted within 21 months.
“This initiative reflects DTC’s broader strategy to improve its financial health through asset monetisation, on the lines of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) model,” a senior DTC official said. “EPIL’s experience in handling large-scale infrastructure projects will be pivotal in transforming these sites into modern, multi-utility hubs.”
The redevelopment is part of DTC’s larger plan to increase parking capacity, develop multi-level depots, upgrade residential colonies, and commercialise its transport assets. Currently, DTC operates 2,372 CNG and 1,612 electric buses, with 1,040 more e-buses slated for induction.
DTC has also partnered with PSUs like NBCC (India) Ltd and DMRC in recent years to monetise its land assets. While NBCC will oversee implementation from concept to commissioning, EPIL will serve as the technical consultant and project planner for the current initiative.
