Delhi: In a pivotal leadership transition at Army Headquarters, Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh has officially assumed the appointment of Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) as of 31 July 2025. A veteran Special Forces officer with a stellar track record in operational logistics and high-altitude warfare, his elevation signals strategic continuity backed by combat-tested experience.

Combat Roots: Forged in Special Forces

Commissioned into the 4th Battalion of The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) in December 1987, Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh’s military journey began with elite boots on ground. An alumnus of La Martiniere College, Lucknow University, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, the General Officer has served in some of the most demanding operations including OP PAWAN (Sri Lanka), OP MEGHDOOT (Siachen), OP ORCHID (North East), and several tenures in OP RAKSHAK (Jammu & Kashmir).

His operational ethos was shaped early by high-risk, high-impact missions, laying a foundation for decades of leadership under fire.

Tactical Command, Strategic Depth

With a career spanning 38 years, Lt Gen Singh has held key command and staff appointments that reflect both operational grit and strategic vision. He commanded a Special Forces Unit in the volatile Kashmir Valley and along the Line of Control. He later led an Infantry Brigade and a Mountain Division during OP SNOW LEOPARD, India’s critical response to Chinese aggression along the Line of Actual Control.

As General Officer Commanding (GOC) of a strategically significant Corps headquartered in Himachal Pradesh, he was tasked with securing the sensitive regions of Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot—areas pivotal to India’s Western theatre operations.

Before assuming his current role, Lt Gen Singh served as Director General Operational Logistics & Strategic Movement at Army HQ, where he orchestrated force mobility and logistical preparedness across theatres.

Academic Rigour Meets Field Mastery

The General Officer’s academic profile mirrors his operational brilliance. He has completed the prestigious Staff Course at DSSC Wellington, the Higher Defence Management Course at CDM Secunderabad, and an Advanced Professional Programme in Public Administration at IIPA. He holds a Master in Management Studies from Osmania University and an M.Phil. from Punjab University, underscoring his holistic grasp of both defence policy and administrative governance.

Honours for Exceptional Service

For his distinguished service, Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh has been decorated with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and a Bar to the Sena Medal (SM & Bar)—recognitions that reflect his sustained excellence in command and contribution to national defence.

As he takes over the second-highest position in the Indian Army, expectations are high for his leadership to further bolster operational readiness, force modernization, and strategic reach.
