Raipur/Dehradun: In a significant step towards energy sustainability and grid flexibility, THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) for the supply of 184.08 MW of power from its Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand.
A Strategic Move to Meet Gujarat’s Peak Power Needs
The agreement, signed on 25 June 2025, is strategically aimed at meeting Gujarat’s peak-hour electricity demand and enabling the seamless integration of renewable energy (RE) sources into the grid. The Tehri PSP is India’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, offering Gujarat flexible, reliable, and clean energy for its dynamic energy requirements.
The signing ceremony was attended by top dignitaries, including Shri Kanubhai Desai, Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat; Shri S. J. Haider, Additional Chief Secretary; Shri Anupam Anand, MD, GUVNL; and Ms. Bhakti Shamal, Joint Secretary, Government of Gujarat.
Innovation at the Core: THDCIL’s Commitment to Clean Energy
Shri R. K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDCIL, emphasized that the project reflects THDCIL’s engineering excellence and reinforces its role in India’s energy transition.
“With India’s first Variable Speed PSP, we are offering Gujarat a reliable and green energy solution to meet its peak-hour requirements. This partnership aligns with our vision of a sustainable and flexible energy future,” Vishnoi said.
Driving Policy Goals and Grid Stability
Shri Sipan Kumar Garg, Director (Finance), THDCIL, highlighted the strategic nature of the agreement in supporting the Government of India’s focus on pumped storage technology as a crucial tool for grid balancing and flexible generation, especially in light of the growing share of variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
“This PPA represents a major leap toward delivering commercially viable clean energy solutions. THDCIL remains focused on forward-looking initiatives that align with national energy priorities,” Garg noted.
The agreement also signals THDCIL’s growing presence as a key player in innovative hydropower solutions. The organization is integrating state-of-the-art technologies to meet both environmental goals and commercial viability standards.
