Forging the Future: SAIL Powers Zojila Tunnel with Over 31,000 Tonnes of Steel, Reinforcing Nation-Building Legacy

From Atal Tunnel to Zojila: SAIL Continues Legacy of Supporting India's Mega Projects
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: In a remarkable demonstration of its commitment to nation-building, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has emerged as the single largest steel supplier to the under-construction Zojila Tunnel project — soon to be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel.

SAIL, a Maharatna PSU and India’s largest steelmaker, has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT Re-bars, Structurals, and Plates, for this strategically significant infrastructure project.

Vital Support for a Strategic Project

The Zojila Tunnel, located at a staggering 11,578 feet above sea level, will connect Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil, offering vital all-weather connectivity across the Himalayas. Spread across more than 30 kilometers, the tunnel is a critical part of the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway and will drastically improve both civilian and military mobility in this geopolitically sensitive region.

As the tunnel progresses toward its projected 2027 completion, SAIL’s continuous steel supply ensures timely construction despite the harsh terrain and logistical complexities.

  • Atal Tunnel
  • Bandra-Worli Sea Link
  • Dhola Sadiya Bridge
  • Bogibeel Bridge

These contributions reflect SAIL’s pivotal role in shaping India’s physical and strategic infrastructure, reaffirming its identity not just as a steel producer but as a nation-building partner.

  • Status: Under construction
  • Expected Completion: 2027
