New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor at the National Law University (NLU), Delhi, marking what the institution described as a “transformative chapter in Indian legal education.”
The announcement was made by NLU Delhi on Thursday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing pride in welcoming Justice Chandrachud into its academic fold. The appointment comes six months after his retirement from the judiciary in November 2024.

“This historic engagement marks a transformative chapter in Indian legal education, bringing one of our most progressive jurists to guide the next generation of legal minds,” said NLU Chancellor G.S. Bajpai. A photograph of Justice Chandrachud with Chancellor Bajpai accompanied the announcement.
Justice Chandrachud served as the 50th Chief Justice of India from November 2022 to November 2024 and is widely regarded as a progressive voice in the Indian judiciary.
During his tenure on the Supreme Court, which began in 2016, he presided over 38 Constitution Benches and delivered several landmark judgments. His contributions include verdicts on the Ayodhya land dispute, the right to privacy, decriminalization of consensual same-sex relationships, and the abrogation of Article 370.
Legal experts and academics have welcomed the move, stating that his appointment will significantly enrich NLU Delhi’s academic and research landscape.
