Former RBI Governor D Subbarao Gets Nostalgic At His Alma Mater

Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and an illustrious civil servant, recently made an emotional visit to Rau’s IAS Study Circle, the institution where he once prepared for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) examination. This visit marked a significant milestone in Dr. Subbarao’s life, allowing him to reconnect with the place that played a pivotal role in shaping his distinguished career.

Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 2008 to 2013. A respected civil servant and economist, Dr. Subbarao is known for his significant contributions to India’s economic policy. His book, Just a Mercenary?: Notes from My Life and Career, chronicles his remarkable journey and offers insights from his distinguished career.

Dr. Subbarao, who topped the Civil Services Examination in 1972, was warmly welcomed by the current students and faculty at Rau’s IAS Study Circle. Reflecting on his time at the institute, he shared, “Visiting my alma mater took me 50 years back.” His nostalgic reminiscences deeply touched the hearts of the current aspirants, underscoring the profound impact Rau’s IAS Study Circle had on his professional journey.

During his visit, Dr. Subbarao engaged in an interactive session with the students, answering their questions and addressing their concerns with genuine empathy and insight. A notable highlight of Dr. Subbarao’s visit was the mention of his newly released book, Just a Mercenary?: Notes from My Life and Career. The book is a heartfelt tribute to his roots, with the first chapter focusing on a key moment in his life – when Dr. S. Rau, the founder of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, personally called to congratulate him on passing the Civil Services Examination. This gesture of recognition from Dr. Rau was a turning point in Dr. Subbarao’s life, reinforcing his commitment to public service.

Expressing his deep connection to Dr. S. Rau and the institute, Dr. Subbarao shared his gratitude and admiration.

“I am glad to visit the coaching institute and happy to see the same philosophy of making small-sized batches for proper attention to all,” he said.

His words highlighted how Rau’s IAS Study Circle continues to prioritize individual attention and foster excellence, maintaining the timeless values of dedication and perseverance.

Dr. Subbarao’s illustrious career is a testament to the power of education and mentorship. After securing the top rank in the IAS examination, he went on to serve as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 2008 to 2013. During his tenure at the RBI, Dr. Subbarao played a crucial role in navigating the Indian economy through the global financial crisis, implementing significant policy measures that stabilized the financial system and promoted economic growth.
