Raipur: In a major move to strengthen India’s domestic fertilizer production, the Government of Chhattisgarh has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-run GAIL (India) Limited to develop a greenfield gas-based fertilizer project in the state. The non-binding MoU was signed in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Mr. Vishnu Deo Sai. Mr. Rajat Kumar, Secretary (Commerce & Industries), Government of Chhattisgarh, and Mr. Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development), GAIL (India) Limited, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.
Project Overview and Capacity
Under the terms of the MoU, GAIL India will conduct detailed techno-economic studies for establishing a urea manufacturing plant with an estimated production capacity of 12.70 lakh metric tons (LMT) per annum. The facility is proposed to be strategically located along GAIL’s Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda Natural Gas Pipeline (MNJPL) corridor, enabling seamless access to natural gas supply and efficient logistics.
The techno-economic evaluation will guide GAIL in making informed investment decisions for the project. Once finalized, the facility is expected to contribute significantly to domestic urea production and reduce dependence on imports.
State Government Facilitation
The Chhattisgarh government will extend support to the project across all stages. Key facilitation measures include:
- Conducting and supporting feasibility and technical studies
- Identification and allocation of suitable land parcels
- Coordination with state and central authorities for approvals
- Assistance with statutory and regulatory clearances
- Development of enabling infrastructure necessary for project implementation
The state’s proactive role ensures that the project can progress efficiently and attract timely investments from GAIL.
Strategic Significance
This partnership represents a strategic push toward strengthening India’s fertilizer manufacturing capabilities while promoting industrial growth in Chhattisgarh. By aligning with GAIL’s existing gas pipeline infrastructure, the project promises both logistical efficiency and energy optimization.
The proposed plant will not only meet growing domestic demand for urea but also create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region.
