Mumbai: GAIL (India) Limited has announced a revision in the completion schedule of its flagship Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Pipeline (MNJPL) project. The Board of Directors approved the update during a meeting held today, setting a new full operational date of February 28, 2026.
The MNJPL, spanning 1,702 km, is a critical infrastructure project designed to strengthen natural gas connectivity across central and eastern India, boosting industrial growth and ensuring energy security.
Project Sections and Operational Status
The MNJPL is divided into three major sections:
- Mumbai to Nagpur Pipeline (Part-A): 693 km
- Nagpur to Jharsuguda Pipeline (Part-B): 692 km
- Nagpur to Jabalpur Pipeline (Part-C): 317 km
Currently, the Mumbai-Nagpur section and parts of the Nagpur-Jharsuguda stretch across Chhattisgarh and Odisha are already operational, allowing phased supply of gas to these regions. The remaining sections are expected to be fully commissioned by February 2026, following pre-commissioning activities that are already underway.
Regulatory Approval for Revised Timeline
GAIL is in the process of seeking approval from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for the revised completion schedule. The delay from the original January 1, 2026, target reflects the finalization of pre-commissioning and commissioning processes across multiple sections of the pipeline.
Strategic Importance of MNJPL
The MNJPL project is poised to be a game-changer for India’s energy infrastructure, enabling smoother distribution of natural gas to industries and urban centers in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand. It is expected to reduce dependency on conventional fuels, support cleaner energy initiatives, and strengthen the energy supply chain in central and eastern India.
