New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited, the state-run natural gas utility, has announced a revised timeline for its ambitious Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda Pipeline (MNPL) Project, extending the overall completion target to December 31, 2025. The decision was taken during a meeting of the company’s Board of Directors held today.

The MNPL project spans 1,702 km and is critical to expanding India’s natural gas infrastructure across Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh.

Breakdown of Pipeline Sections

The pipeline network is divided into three parts:

  • Part A: Mumbai to Nagpur – 693 km
  • Part B: Nagpur to Jharsuguda – 692 km
  • Part C: Nagpur to Jabalpur – 317 km

Current Progress Across Regions

Mumbai–Nagpur Segment (Part A):

  • Fully mechanically completed
  • PESO inspection done; awaiting final approval to begin gas operations

Nagpur–Jharsuguda Segment (Part B):

  • Odisha & Chhattisgarh stretch (489 km): Complete and ready for gas-in post final permissions
  • Maharashtra stretch (203 km): About 9 km of work is still pending, expected to be finished by December 2025

Nagpur–Jabalpur Segment (Part C):

  • Madhya Pradesh section (255 km): Mechanically completed
  • Maharashtra section (62 km): Only 1.8 km pending; likely to be completed by October 2025

Revised Completion Timeline

GAIL will implement a phased commissioning approach, bringing completed sections online as soon as permissions are secured. Full project commissioning is now targeted for end of December 2025, slightly delayed from the earlier goal of September 30, 2025.

Significance of the MNPL Pipeline

This pipeline is a vital component in India’s strategy to boost cleaner energy access and gas distribution. It will:

  • Connect key industrial and urban centers
  • Strengthen cross-regional natural gas infrastructure
  • Support the government’s cleaner energy initiatives and reduce carbon footprint

Despite the adjusted timeline, GAIL has made substantial progress, with the majority of the pipeline already mechanically complete and inspection processes underway. The company remains committed to delivering the project within the revised schedule, unlocking major benefits for India’s energy economy.
