A large-scale Global Firefly Count has commenced across several countries, including India, with over one lakh participants joining the two-day global campaign. The estimated population of fireflies will be determined within a week, forming the basis for a comprehensive conservation policy aimed at protecting the species.
The campaign has been jointly launched by Graphic Era University, Dehradun, and the Wildlife Institute of India in response to the alarming decline in firefly populations observed in recent years.
Fireflies Under Threat
Experts attribute the rapid decrease in firefly numbers to climate change, increasing light pollution, and the intensive use of chemicals in agriculture. This decline is raising ecological concerns, as fireflies are crucial bio-indicators of environmental health and play an essential role in maintaining ecosystem balance.
Global Awareness Through ‘Firefly Day’
To promote awareness and spark global conservation efforts, ‘Firefly Day’ is observed annually on 5th and 6th July. The current count aligns with these dates, aiming to gather critical data on firefly distribution and density.
Organisers believe that this citizen science initiative will help generate valuable insights into the environmental impact of urbanisation and changing agricultural practices, ultimately guiding future strategies to protect and revive firefly populations worldwide.
