The Indian Coast Guard‘s maritime strength received a significant boost with the ceremonial launch of ‘Achal’, the fifth Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) in a series of eight being built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). The launch took place on June 16, 2025, in Goa, with Ms. Kavita Harbola officiating the ceremony in the presence of Additional Director General Anil Kumar Harbola, Coast Guard Commander (Western Seaboard).
Designed and built under rigorous dual-class certification from both the American Bureau of Shipping and the Indian Register of Shipping, ‘Achal’ showcases more than 60% indigenous content, reinforcing India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The 52-metre-long and 8-metre-wide vessel, with a displacement of 320 tons, is powered by a controllable pitch propeller (CPP) propulsion system that allows it to achieve speeds up to 27 knots. The FPV is equipped for multifaceted operations such as surveillance, patrol, monitoring, and control, aimed at protecting offshore assets and island territories.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs. 473 crore, the vessel is part of a project that has significantly contributed to employment generation and provided a boost to MSMEs associated with GSL and allied manufacturing sectors.
The launch event was attended by Mr. Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman & Managing Director of GSL, along with senior officials from the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and representatives from the shipbuilding industry. This milestone marks another chapter in the enduring collaboration between the Indian Coast Guard and GSL in strengthening coastal defence capabilities.
