Indian Coast Guard Successfully Transfers Singaporean Vessel MV Wan Hai 503 Amid Challenging Conditions – Details Inside

The ICG had been keeping the fire-stricken vessel at a safe distance from the Kerala coast for several days
Indian Masterminds Stories

In a significant maritime operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in coordination with the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, successfully handed over the tow of the distressed Singapore-flagged container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 to the ocean-going tug Offshore Warrior on June 13, 2025.

The ICG had been keeping the fire-stricken vessel at a safe distance from the Kerala coast for several days. However, worsening weather conditions and powerful westerly winds caused the ship to dangerously drift toward the shoreline, prompting urgent action.

Braving restricted aerial visibility and delays in boarding due to rough sea conditions, a Navy Sea King helicopter from Kochi managed to winch salvage personnel onto the vessel under extremely hazardous conditions. The team successfully connected a 600-metre tow line to Offshore Warrior approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Kochi. The vessel is currently being towed westward at a speed of 1.8 knots and is now nearly 35 nautical miles offshore.

Three ICG Offshore Patrol Vessels continue to escort the container ship while sustaining critical firefighting efforts. Thanks to the ICG’s relentless action, the fire has been largely contained, with only thick smoke and a few isolated hotspots remaining—helping to avert a potential environmental crisis.

The ICG remains in close coordination with the Directorate General of Shipping to ensure the vessel stays at least 50 nautical miles from the Indian coast. The situation is expected to further stabilise with the arrival of additional firefighting support vessels, pending final decisions by the vessel’s owners in line with international maritime regulations.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG)

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a maritime security force responsible for safeguarding India’s coastal and maritime interests, including search and rescue, law enforcement, and environmental protection. Operating under the Ministry of Defence, the ICG plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of life and property at sea.
