Dhanbad: In a significant boost to India’s coal production momentum, the Government has lauded Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a key subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), for achieving a record coal production of 3.39 million tonnes (MT) in April 2025, alongside its noteworthy efforts in environmental sustainability, community development, and scientific collaboration. The achievement marks a strong start to the fiscal year and underscores BCCL’s strategic role in bolstering India’s coking coal supply.
Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, chaired a comprehensive review meeting with BCCL officials on Monday and commended the company’s performance. He emphasized the need for a robust strategy to achieve BCCL’s ambitious 46 MT production target for FY 2025–26, in line with Coal India’s national goal of 875 MT.
“BCCL plays a critical role in supplying coking coal, which is vital for India’s industrial growth, especially the steel sector,” Dubey stated. He also reviewed operational parameters including production, dispatch, and coal quality.
The minister took particular note of BCCL’s collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and urged the company to scale up its scientific and environmental initiatives further. During the meeting, BCCL CMD Samiran Dutta briefed the minister on the company’s production strategy, ongoing CSIR-linked projects, and future sustainability goals.
Mr Dubey urged the company to expand its developmental and sustainability initiatives further, especially in partnership with CSIR.
Focus on the Jharia Master Plan
The minister also reviewed the Jharia Master Plan, which addresses rehabilitation and resettlement of families residing in fire-affected areas of the Jharia coalfields. He underlined the importance of timely implementation to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those impacted by decades of underground mine fires.
During the meeting, BCCL CMD Samiran Dutta presented an update on the company’s production strategies, progress on CSIR-linked scientific initiatives, and long-term plans to meet its output goals while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.
Power Sector Assured of Fuel Supply
Highlighting the consistent progress of CIL and its subsidiaries, Dubey assured that India’s thermal power plants will not face any coal shortages, thanks to the robust performance of companies like BCCL. He added that achievements in coal production would also positively impact regional research and industrial innovation, particularly through CSIR collaborations.
In his concluding remarks, the minister reiterated the government’s support for strengthening coal sector performance while ensuring environmental and community welfare are kept front and center.
