New Delhi: The digital-only toll collection initiative has now been officially implemented across National Highway fee plazas, marking a major shift toward a fully cashless road system.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, all toll payments must now be made through FASTag or UPI, eliminating cash transactions completely. This move aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve transparency, and make highway travel faster and smoother for millions of commuters across the country.

Details of Digital-Only Toll Collection

The government has made it mandatory for all vehicles to pay toll charges digitally.

  • Cash payments are no longer accepted at toll plazas
  • Only FASTag and UPI payments are allowed
  • Applies to all National Highway fee plazas across India

This policy has been introduced to modernize toll collection and improve overall efficiency.

Why Did the Government  Digital Toll System?

The shift to digital tolling is part of India’s larger push toward digital infrastructure and smart mobility.

Key Reasons:

  • Reduce long queues at toll plazas
  • Save fuel and travel time
  • Increase transparency in toll collection
  • Minimize cash handling issues

Electronic toll systems allow vehicles to pass without stopping, which improves traffic flow significantly.

Role of FASTag and UPI

FASTag System

  • Uses RFID technology for automatic toll deduction
  • Installed on vehicle windscreen
  • Enables non-stop toll payments

UPI Payments

  • Acts as an alternative digital payment option
  • Useful for users without FASTag

Vehicles without FASTag may still pay via UPI but could face higher charges in some cases to encourage digital adoption.

Impact of Digital-Only Toll Collection

The digital-only system is expected to bring major improvements:

Faster Travel

Vehicles no longer need to stop for cash payments, reducing waiting time.

Less Traffic Congestion

Smooth toll operations will decrease bottlenecks on busy highways.

Better User Experience

Digital payments make the process easier and more convenient.

Environmental Benefits

Less idling at toll plazas means lower fuel consumption and pollution.

Temporary Exceptions in Some States

The implementation has been temporarily paused in some regions due to the Model Code of Conduct during elections.

Affected areas include:

  • Tamil Nadu
  • Kerala
  • Assam
  • West Bengal
  • Puducherry
