Road Safety Month 2026: NHAI Launches Pilot for Real-Time Stray Cattle Safety Alerts on National Highways

New Delhi: In a significant step towards enhancing road safety and reducing accidents caused by stray cattle, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a pilot initiative to provide real-time safety alerts to National Highway users. The initiative has been introduced as part of road safety measures to mark Road Safety Month 2026, with a special focus on preventing accidents resulting from sudden cattle movement, particularly during foggy and low-visibility conditions.

Addressing the Growing Risk of Stray Cattle on Highways

Stray cattle movement has emerged as a major safety concern on several National Highway stretches, often leading to fatal accidents and serious injuries. Recognizing this challenge, NHAI, in collaboration with telecom service providers, has developed a technology-driven solution aimed at alerting commuters in advance when they approach cattle-prone zones. The objective is to improve driver preparedness, encourage cautious driving, and ultimately reduce accident rates on these high-risk stretches.

Pilot Project Rolled Out on Two Key Highway Corridors

The pilot initiative is currently being implemented on the Jaipur–Agra and Jaipur–Rewari National Highway corridors. These stretches have been identified as particularly vulnerable to stray cattle movement based on historical accident data and on-ground assessments.

Under the pilot, location-based alerts will be triggered for commuters approximately 10 kilometers before they enter identified high-risk zones. This advance warning is intended to provide sufficient lead time for drivers to slow down, remain alert, and take necessary precautionary measures.

Flash SMS and Voice Alerts to Ensure Effective Communication

To ensure maximum reach and effectiveness, NHAI has designed a two-step alert mechanism during the pilot phase. National Highway users will first receive a Flash SMS, followed by a voice alert, ensuring that the safety advisory is noticed even if the driver misses the text message.

The Flash SMS will be delivered in Hindi and will read:
“आगे आवारा पशु ग्रस्त क्षेत्र है। कृपया धीरे और सावधानी से चलें।”

This message will be immediately followed by a voice alert conveying the same warning. To avoid inconvenience and alert fatigue among users, the system has been designed so that repeat alerts will not be sent to the same user within a 30-minute window.

Telecom Technology Powers Targeted and Timely Alerts

The initiative leverages advanced telecom technology to ensure timely, location-specific, and targeted delivery of safety advisories. Alerts will be generated based on mapped cattle-prone zones, identified through a combination of historical accident records and field-level inputs.

As part of the project, Reliance Jio has upgraded its telecom platform to support the nationwide delivery of these real-time alerts, ensuring scalability and reliability of the system. The upgraded infrastructure enables precise geofencing and efficient dissemination of alerts to commuters traveling through designated high-risk areas.

Enhancing Driver Awareness and Road Safety

By integrating data-driven insights with telecom infrastructure, the pilot aims to significantly enhance driver awareness on National Highways. The real-time nature of the alerts is expected to be particularly beneficial during night-time travel, foggy conditions, and early morning hours when visibility is low and the risk posed by stray cattle is higher.

This initiative aligns with NHAI’s broader commitment to improving road safety, reducing fatalities, and enhancing the overall user experience on National Highways.

Possibility of Nationwide Expansion

Based on the outcomes, feedback, and effectiveness of the pilot project, NHAI will evaluate the feasibility of scaling up the initiative to other stray cattle–prone zones across the country. If successful, the system could become a key component of NHAI’s long-term road safety strategy, helping to address one of the most persistent safety challenges on Indian highways.
