Kargil: Director General of Police, Union Territory of Ladakh, Anand Jain, a 1999-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, concluded a two-day visit to Kargil after reviewing the district’s security situation, crime investigations and policing arrangements, with an emphasis on coordination among security agencies and stronger vigilance.

Jain held meetings with police personnel and representatives of security agencies during the visit and stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination to safeguard residents and respond effectively to security concerns.

DGP Reviews Crime Situation, Directs Faster Investigations

A crime review meeting was held at the District Police Office in Kargil, bringing together supervisory police officers, Station House Officers and Investigating Officers from Kargil, Wakha, Panikhar and Drass police stations.

The DGP reviewed the status of investigations and directed officers to speed up cases that have remained pending for a long period.

Key areas highlighted during the review included:

  • NDPS cases: Officers were directed to give priority to investigations involving heroin trafficking and strengthen action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
  • Theft cases: Faster investigation and follow-up were emphasised.
  • POCSO cases: Officers were asked to prioritise investigations involving offences against children.
  • Cybercrime: The DGP called for greater attention to cyber-related cases and awareness.
  • Community policing: Police were encouraged to strengthen engagement with local communities.

The focus on narcotics investigations is consistent with Jain’s recent directions to Ladakh Police to pursue professional and scientific investigation of NDPS cases and identify wider supply networks.

Police Infrastructure and Facilities Inaugurated

During the Kargil visit, Jain inaugurated newly constructed residential quarters for gazetted police officers at Baroo and a mess-cum-kitchen facility at Sankoo.

He also inaugurated a 72-foot-high National Flag at the District Police Lines in Kargil. The project was carried out jointly by the district administration, Kargil Police and the Flag Foundation of India.

Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar, SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav and Major General (Retd) Asim Kohli of the Flag Foundation of India were present at the flag inauguration.

DGP Meets Residents in Kargil, Sankoo and Rangdum

Jain also interacted with members of the public during meetings held in Kargil, Sankoo and Rangdum.

Local delegations raised concerns related to drug abuse, cybercrime awareness and other issues affecting their communities. The DGP said the concerns raised would be examined through the appropriate mechanisms.

He also appealed to residents to provide information to the police about drug trafficking and urged young people to consider joining the police force through the ongoing constable recruitment process.

The visit comes amid continued efforts by Ladakh Police and the administration to strengthen coordination among enforcement agencies and intensify measures against drug abuse. Recent UT-level discussions have also stressed intelligence-sharing and coordinated action involving police and other departments.
