In a historic milestone for India’s technology sector, the country’s first “End-to-End Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Facility” was inaugurated in Sanand, Gujarat. The state-of-the-art plant, developed by CG Power, was jointly inaugurated by Union Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw and Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel.
The project, which secured government approval in November 2024, has been completed in record time, with operations commencing within a year. The facility is expected to significantly contribute to India’s push for Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in the semiconductor sector.
Chief Minister Highlights Gujarat’s Leadership in Semiconductor Policy
Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel underlined Gujarat’s pioneering role in implementing India’s first state-level semiconductor policy in 2022. He stressed that Gujarat is the only state where four semiconductor plants have been approved to operate simultaneously.
He expressed confidence that chips manufactured in Gujarat will help India emerge as a global leader in semiconductors. “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is fast moving towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy,” Mr. Patel stated. He also pointed out that international rating agencies have upgraded India’s credit rating, reflecting robust economic fundamentals.
Union Minister Emphasises India’s Semiconductor Talent Powerhouse
Union Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Gujarat’s Sanand and Dholera projects, noting their rapid progress. He announced that India has approved 10 semiconductor projects, with Gujarat leading the way.
Highlighting India’s focus on skill development, Mr. Vaishnaw said, “In collaboration with 270 universities and institutions, youth are being trained in the semiconductor sector. Already, 70 universities have designed and manufactured 25 chips, a remarkable achievement matched by very few countries.”
Industry Minister Showcases Gujarat’s Growth Model
Industry Minister Mr. Balvantsinh Rajput noted that Sanand and Dholera have emerged as semiconductor hubs alongside automobile and allied industries. He credited the Vibrant Gujarat initiative, launched by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi in 2003, for driving consistent industrial growth in the state.
He added that Gujarat’s investor-friendly policies, strong infrastructure, and single-window clearances have strengthened investor confidence, placing the state at the forefront of new-age industries like semiconductors and AI.
Industry Leaders and Officials Applaud the Milestone
CG Power Chairman Mr. Vellayan Subbiah described the launch as a defining step in India’s march towards self-reliance in semiconductors. CG Semi’s Chairman Mr. Girish Chaturvedi delivered the welcome address, while DST Secretary Ms. P. Bharati highlighted Gujarat’s proactive role in advancing the sector.
The event was attended by Sanand MLA Mr. Kanubhai Patel, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Technology Mr. Sushil Pal, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Industry Ms. Mamta Verma, CG Semis CEO Jerry Agnes, and several senior industrialists and plant officials.
