India and Panama Unveil New Maritime Partnership to Boost Logistics and Digital Connectivity

India and Panama have strengthened their maritime partnership by focusing on logistics, AI, maritime security, digital transformation and global connectivity. The agreement aims to boost trade, improve shipping links and expand cooperation with Latin America.

New Delhi: India-Panama maritime partnership has entered a new phase as India and Panama agreed to expand cooperation in maritime security, logistics, digital transformation, skill development and global connectivity. The decision was taken during a bilateral meeting between Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Panama’s Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez. According to the official Press Information Bureau (PIB), both countries aim to boost trade, strengthen shipping links and build a more resilient maritime ecosystem.

India and Panama held high-level talks to strengthen their long-standing maritime relationship. Both countries identified five key areas for future cooperation:

  • Maritime security
  • Logistics and shipping
  • Skill development
  • Digital transformation
  • Global maritime connectivity

The partnership is expected to improve trade, investment and shipping operations between India, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Panama is one of the world’s leading maritime and logistics hubs. It connects global shipping routes through the Panama Canal and serves as a gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. India believes stronger cooperation with Panama will:

What Did Sarbananda Sonowal Say

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said India and Panama are natural maritime partners. He said India’s growing strength in ports, logistics, inland waterways, shipbuilding, cruise tourism and green shipping makes it an ideal partner for Panama. According to the minister, both countries can work together to improve global connectivity and create sustainable economic growth.

India-Panama Maritime Partnership: Digital Transformation Will Be a Major Focus

Panama proposed four priority areas for deeper cooperation with India:

  • Maritime security
  • Technical cooperation between maritime authorities
  • Maritime education and skill development
  • Digital maritime transformation

The digital partnership will include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Smart ports
  • Maritime Single Window Systems
  • Digital logistics solutions

These technologies can make ports faster, smarter and more efficient.

India-Panama Maritime Partnership: India Proposes Wider Maritime Cooperation

India also suggested expanding cooperation through a bilateral maritime agreement. The proposed partnership includes:

  • Port development
  • Maritime transport
  • Green ship recycling
  • Seafarer welfare
  • Warehousing
  • Maritime infrastructure
  • Port modernisation
  • Digital innovation

Minister Sonowal also invited Panama’s Minister of Maritime Affairs to attend India Maritime Week 2026 in New Delhi.

India and Panama Share a Long Maritime History

India and Panama have maintained maritime relations since the 19th century. Both countries also recognised the contribution of the Indian diaspora in strengthening bilateral ties.

Officials agreed that sharing knowledge in shipping, ports and logistics can unlock new opportunities for trade and investment across the Americas.
