Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), one of India’s premier defence shipyards, hosted H.E. Mr. Christopher John Cooter, High Commissioner of Canada to India, at its Kolkata facility on December 12. The visit aimed to explore potential collaboration in maritime and defence manufacturing between India and Canada.
Accompanying the High Commissioner were Mr. Eelco Hendrik Jager, Minister (Commercial), and Mr. Arjun Kumar Dutta, Trade Commissioner, who participated in detailed discussions with GRSE’s senior management.
Showcasing GRSE’s Advanced Capabilities
During the visit, the Canadian delegation received an in-depth overview of GRSE’s technological expertise, advanced manufacturing facilities, and ongoing defence projects. The programme included a comprehensive presentation on the shipyard’s competencies, highlighting its role in warship construction, engineering excellence, and contributions to India’s indigenisation efforts in defence production.
Discussions emphasized potential areas for collaboration between Indian and Canadian industries, particularly in shipbuilding, marine technologies, and defence manufacturing. GRSE’s management highlighted the shipyard’s capability to support complex projects, foster innovation, and meet global standards in defence manufacturing.

The visit underscores the growing bilateral engagement between India and Canada in defence and maritime sectors. Both sides expressed keen interest in leveraging mutual strengths to enhance technology exchange, promote sustainable defence manufacturing, and expand industrial partnerships.
