Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), one of India’s leading shipyards, was awarded the prestigious Excellence in Financial Performance award at Samudra Utkarsh 2025. The event, organised by the Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production, showcased India’s indigenous warshipbuilding capabilities. The award was presented by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, recognising GRSE’s robust growth and leadership in the defence shipbuilding sector.
Outstanding Shipbuilding Achievements
GRSE has maintained a remarkable performance trajectory in both operational and financial spheres. Since commissioning its first indigenous vessel, INS Ajay, in 1961, GRSE has built 803 platforms, including 114 warships, the highest delivered by any Indian shipyard. Over the last five years alone, the shipyard delivered 14 warships and eight commercial vessels, including exports, reflecting its strong execution capabilities and commitment to quality.

Financial Growth and Performance
On the financial front, GRSE has demonstrated phenomenal growth. Over the past five years, the company reported a 345% increase in revenue from operations and a 244% rise in Profit After Tax, highlighting effective management, operational excellence, and strategic growth initiatives.
Contribution to National Infrastructure and Defence Self-Reliance
Beyond naval contributions, GRSE has delivered over 5,900 portable steel bridges to the Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation, and other agencies. These bridges have been instrumental in improving connectivity in remote regions and supporting disaster response efforts. The recognition at Samudra Utkarsh underlines GRSE’s continued commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, defence self-reliance, and the strengthening of India’s national infrastructure.
