Gandhinagar: In a major push to upgrade rural infrastructure, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved a budget of ₹2,609 crore for the resurfacing and repair of 1,258 rural roads across the state. The extensive initiative will cover 4,196 kilometers of roadways in North Gujarat, South Gujarat, and Saurashtra, enhancing last-mile connectivity in rural regions.
Region-Wise Road Resurfacing Plan
The road works will be distributed across all districts, with the following region-wise breakdown:
- North Gujarat: 487 roads spanning 1,609 km
- South Gujarat: 499 roads covering 1,528 km
- Saurashtra: 272 roads totaling 1,059 km
This large-scale resurfacing effort aims to provide all-weather road connectivity for remote villages and improve transportation between small towns and rural settlements.
Government Responds to Grassroots Demands
The funding decision comes in response to consistent requests from rural citizens, elected representatives, and community leaders who have emphasized the need for durable and reliable road infrastructure.
“This initiative will significantly strengthen Gujarat’s rural road network, making transport safer and more efficient for thousands of people living in remote areas,” a government official stated.
Expected Benefits
Once completed, the resurfacing project is expected to:
- Improve road safety and durability in high-rainfall or flood-prone areas
- Enhance connectivity to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities
- Support economic development in rural and semi-urban regions
- Boost overall transport efficiency and mobility
Continuing Focus on Infrastructure
This announcement is part of the Gujarat government’s broader efforts to modernize rural infrastructure, having previously allocated significant funds for roads, irrigation, and water supply projects. The resurfacing project further aligns with the state’s long-term vision of inclusive growth through improved physical infrastructure.
