Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has introduced a significant relief measure for thousands of rural families under the state’s housing schemes. In a recent announcement, the Chief Minister confirmed that beneficiaries of the Gujarat Rural Housing Board (GRHB) would receive a one-time waiver on penalty interest. This initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on families who are ready to repay the principal amount of their housing loans but have struggled with penalty interest due to delayed payments.
Penalty Interest Waiver for Rural Housing Beneficiaries
The Gujarat government’s new initiative will allow beneficiaries of the GRHB’s housing schemes to have their penalty interest completely waived off, provided they pay the full principal loan amount within six months. Previously, a penalty interest of 2% per month had been charged for delayed payments. Under this new scheme, the penalty interest will be completely forgiven, offering substantial relief to rural homeowners who were burdened by escalating debt.

Impact on Over 9,000 Rural Families
This decision is expected to benefit approximately 9,029 rural families in Gujarat. According to government estimates, the waiver will provide a total relief of about ₹154 crore. This move is seen as a much-needed financial respite for low-income rural families who are otherwise unable to clear their dues due to the heavy burden of accumulated penalty interest on their housing loans.
Incentive for Homeownership and Property Rights
One of the most significant aspects of this decision is that rural families who clear the principal loan amount within six months will also gain ownership rights to their homes. This means that these beneficiaries will legally become the owners of their properties, offering them long-term housing security and a stable future.
Faster Regularization of Rural Housing Accounts
The Gujarat government views this move as an important step toward regularizing rural housing accounts. The relief will allow more families to clear their dues, become official homeowners, and contribute to improving the overall housing situation in rural areas. This measure aims to expedite the formalization of property ownership among low-income families.
Call for Timely Action by Beneficiaries
The government has encouraged all eligible beneficiaries to take full advantage of this one-time penalty interest waiver. They are urged to settle their dues within the six-month time frame to benefit from the full relief. Officials emphasize that this initiative is a limited-time opportunity, and families should act promptly to secure their homes.
