Gandhinagar: Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Healthy India, Prosperous India,” the Gujarat government, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has made significant strides in healthcare advancement. The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) in Ahmedabad has become a premier centre for lung cancer treatment, successfully managing thousands of cases from across India over the last five years.
Rising Patient Confidence in Gujarat’s Cancer Care Facilities
Between 2020 and 2024, GCRI treated 4,397 lung cancer patients, including 3,597 men, 799 women, and 1 child. The number of patients has steadily increased each year, from 700 in 2020 to a record 1,086 in 2024. This growth reflects the growing trust patients place in Gujarat’s medical expertise and infrastructure.

PMJAY-MA Scheme: Providing Affordable Access to Life-Saving Treatment
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY-MA) has been instrumental in enabling access to advanced lung cancer treatment for economically weaker sections. Under this scheme, 3,256 patients benefited during this period. Additionally, 1,426 patients from other states traveled to Gujarat for treatment, highlighting the state’s rising prominence as a cancer care hub.
GCRI’s Call for Awareness on World Lung Cancer Day
On World Lung Cancer Day, GCRI emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention. With over 40% of lung cancer cases in India diagnosed late, the institute urges high-risk groups—especially long-term smokers and those exposed to pollution—to undergo timely low-dose CT scans. Dr. Shashank Pandya, Director of GCRI, stressed, “Awareness, early screening, and quitting tobacco are critical to saving lives. GCRI is committed to providing comprehensive and advanced care for all patients.”
