New Delhi: Indian Navy LHD warship program has entered the technical evaluation stage, marking a major step toward building advanced amphibious assault ships.

These Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) vessels are being designed as drone-ready pocket aircraft carriers, capable of carrying helicopters, troops, and unmanned systems.

The Indian Navy LHD warship program will strengthen India’s maritime power, improve rapid deployment capability, and support future warfare needs in the Indian Ocean Region.

What is the Indian Navy LHD Warship Program

The Indian Navy is planning to build modern Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships.

These are large amphibious vessels that can:

  • Carry helicopters and drones
  • Transport troops, tanks, and vehicles
  • Support amphibious assault operations
  • Act like small aircraft carriers

These ships will play a key role in joint military operations involving the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Technical Evaluation Phase Begins

The project has now moved into the technical evaluation stage, where:

  • Ship designs are being carefully reviewed
  • Capabilities of different shipbuilders are being assessed
  • Technology integration options are being studied

This step is important before final approval and construction. The Navy is ensuring that the ships meet future warfare requirements, not just current needs.

What is the Focus of Indian Navy LHD Warship Program

One of the most important features of this program is the focus on drone operations.

The new LHD ships will:

  • Operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • Support surveillance drones
  • Launch and recover combat drones

This makes them similar to “pocket aircraft carriers”, but more flexible and cost-effective.

Drones will help in:

  • Real-time surveillance
  • Target identification
  • Precision strikes

Why LHD Ships Are Important for India

India faces increasing security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

LHD warships will help in:

  • Quick response during conflicts
  • Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR)
  • Evacuation missions
  • Power projection near coastal regions

They are especially useful in island territories like Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

The program is expected to support Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

  • Indian shipyards are likely to play a major role
  • Domestic defence companies will contribute to systems and technology
  • It will create jobs and boost the defence ecosystem

The Ministry of Defence has been promoting indigenous warship building as a long-term strategy.

Future Warfare and Naval Modernisation

Modern navies are moving toward:

  • Drone warfare
  • Network-centric operations
  • Multi-role platforms

The Indian Navy is aligning with these trends by:

  • Integrating drones into ships
  • Building flexible and multi-purpose warships
  • Strengthening maritime dominance

This program reflects India’s shift toward technology-driven naval warfare.
