Gandhinagar: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat Government has made significant progress in strengthening urban water infrastructure as part of Urban Development Year 2025, with a strong focus on ensuring daily and equitable access to safe drinking water across all urban areas of the state.
During the year, urban water resources were increased by 92.97 million litres per day (MLD), while water transmission systems were expanded by 528.35 kilometres, marking a major step toward sustainable urban water management. The initiatives aim to make Gujarat a national model for reliable and efficient urban water supply systems.
Daily Water Supply Ensured in 103 Cities
At present, the Gujarat Government is providing daily water supply in 103 cities through various state and centrally sponsored schemes. In addition, water supply projects are currently underway in 30 cities under different development programs.
To extend daily water supply to the remaining 32 urban local bodies, the state has launched ‘Mission Daily Water Supply’, under which infrastructure development works for multiple components are being planned and implemented. The mission supports urban local bodies in executing water supply and sanitation projects to ensure uninterrupted access to potable drinking water.
SCADA System Enables Digital Monitoring
To enhance efficiency and transparency, the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system has been implemented in major cities across Gujarat. This digital system enables real-time monitoring of water distribution and other water resource-related services.
The SCADA system helps in leak detection, identification of low-pressure zones, reduction of non-revenue water (NRW), monitoring pumping stations for optimal efficiency, valve operation tracking, and ensuring adequate per capita water supply with the required pressure. As a result, water losses have reduced significantly, and urban water services have become more efficient and responsive.
Mission Daily Water Supply to Improve Ease of Living
With the implementation of Mission Daily Water Supply, along with other water-related schemes, citizens will receive potable drinking water on a daily basis, reducing the need for long-term water storage and dependence on alternative water sources.
The Gujarat Urban Development Department stated that these initiatives are part of a structured and planned approach to urban development aimed at improving the Ease of Living for urban residents. By strengthening core infrastructure and adopting digital solutions, the state continues to advance toward sustainable and citizen-centric urban growth.
