Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s IPS cadre is witnessing a generational shift, with Millennials and Gen Z officers together accounting for 53% of the state’s IPS strength.
According to the 2026 IPS Civil List, 105 of the 198 IPS officers in position in Gujarat fall into the Millennial or Gen Z categories. The state ranks eighth among 25 cadres for the combined representation of these two generations.
The changing age profile comes as several senior Gujarat-cadre officers are scheduled to retire over the next five years, potentially further altering the composition of the state’s police leadership.
Gujarat Has 97 Millennials and 8 Gen Z IPS Officers
The 2026 Civil List classifies officers born between 1981 and 1996 as Millennials, while those born in 1997 or later are classified as Gen Z.
Gujarat’s current composition includes:
- 97 Millennial IPS officers
- 8 Gen Z IPS officers
- 105 Millennials and Gen Z combined
- 198 total IPS officers in position
- 53% combined representation
Millennials alone account for nearly half of Gujarat’s IPS cadre, while Gen Z officers currently make up around 4% of the total cadre.
The figures include both directly recruited IPS officers and officers inducted through the promotion quota.
Eight Gen Z Officers Join Gujarat IPS Cadre
The Gen Z representation in Gujarat includes officers born between March 1997 and March 2000.
The Gen Z officers listed for the Gujarat cadre are:
- Simran Bhardwaj
- Jayvir Gadhvi
- Herrsh Sharma
- Gautam Vivekanandan
- Mansi Meena
- Mausam Mehta
- Aniket Patel
- Akash Chavda
Simran Bhardwaj and Mansi Meena, both born in 2000, are identified as the youngest officers in the Gujarat cadre in the list.
These officers are serving or undergoing training in different capacities, including field assignments such as Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).
Gujarat Ranks Eighth Among 25 Cadres
The Civil List data places Gujarat eighth among 25 cadres in terms of the combined share of Millennial and Gen Z officers.

Gujarat’s 53% share places it above several larger cadres in terms of the proportion of Millennial and Gen Z officers, although its overall cadre strength is smaller than some of them.
Senior Officer Retirements Could Further Change Cadre Composition
The changing generational profile also comes against the backdrop of upcoming retirements among Gujarat-cadre IPS officers.
The 2026 Civil List indicates that:
- 4 officers are due to retire in 2026
- 4 officers are due to retire in 2027
- 6 officers are due to retire in 2028
- 4 officers are due to retire in 2029
- 6 officers are due to retire in 2030
This means 24 Gujarat-cadre IPS officers are listed for retirement between 2026 and 2030.
As senior officers retire and younger officers progress through different ranks and postings, the age and experience profile of the cadre is expected to continue changing.
Gen Z Marks Entry of a New Generation in Gujarat Police
Although Gen Z officers currently account for only around 4% of Gujarat’s IPS cadre, their presence represents the entry of a new generation of officers into the state police service.
The much larger Millennial cohort, comprising 97 officers, remains the main driver of the generational shift.
The data therefore points to a gradual transition in Gujarat’s IPS cadre, with younger officers increasingly forming a substantial part of the overall strength while senior officers continue to retire over the coming years.
