Gujarat’s Lift Pipeline Revolution: Over 1.39 Lakh Acres of Tribal Farmland Brought Under Irrigation

₹5,115 Crore Invested in Seven Years to Empower Tribal Farmers. Gujarat’s Lift Pipeline Technology Brings Water Revolution to Tribal Farms; 1.39 Lakh Acres Irrigated

Gandhinagar: In a major step toward sustainable rural development, the Gujarat government has transformed agricultural prospects in tribal regions through the adoption of lift pipeline technology. Over the past seven years, the state has invested ₹5,115 crore to provide irrigation to 1,39,510 acres of farmland across tribal districts, marking a significant milestone in the state’s agrarian development.

Between 2023 and 2025, the government spent ₹2,212 crore, while in the preceding four years (2019–2022), an additional ₹2,903 crore was invested to expand irrigation facilities and enhance water accessibility.

Minister Highlights Commitment to Farmer Welfare

Speaking about the initiative, Minister for Water Resources and Water Supply, Mr. Ishwarsinh Patel, said:

“Farmers’ prosperity and agricultural growth remain one of our top priorities. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi introduced the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat. Under this initiative, we have successfully provided year-round irrigation to farmers in 708 villages across six tribal districts using lift pipeline technology.”

He added that under the upgraded Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana 2.0, the state government is investing ₹3,779 crore to extend irrigation to 1,44,164 acres of farmland in remaining tribal areas. “These projects are advancing rapidly and will be completed within the planned timeframe,” he said.

Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana: A Boon for Tribal Regions

The Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana, launched during the tenure of then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, has emerged as a lifeline for Gujarat’s tribal farmers. Before the introduction of lift pipeline technology, limited irrigation and uncertain rainfall often left farmers struggling.

Now, year-round irrigation has led to improved agricultural productivity, enhanced income stability, and better living conditions. With the introduction of Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana 2.0, the Gujarat government aims to achieve full irrigation coverage in all tribal areas by executing several new projects currently underway.

How Lift Pipeline Technology Works

Lift pipeline irrigation technology is designed for regions where water sources lie below the field level—a common challenge in hilly or undulating terrains. Using high-capacity pumps and pipelines, water is lifted and supplied directly to agricultural fields.

This system ensures:

  • Efficient water delivery to fields at higher elevations
  • Minimal water loss through evaporation or seepage
  • Reduced manual effort for farmers
  • Increased crop yield and water-use efficiency

As a result, this innovation has become a cornerstone of Gujarat’s irrigation strategy, particularly in its tribal and drought-prone regions.

Transforming Lives in Gujarat’s Tribal Belt

By integrating advanced irrigation technology with welfare schemes like Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana, Gujarat has set a new benchmark in tribal agricultural empowerment. With continued focus on infrastructure, water management, and rural livelihoods, the government aims to ensure that no farmer remains dependent on erratic rainfall.
