Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has announced plans to set up an international-standard Medicity near Kadi-Kalol, modelled on the Dubai Health Care City (DHCC) project, with the aim of positioning Ahmedabad as a global medical facilities hub. The ambitious project is estimated to cost around Rs 13,000 crore and will include high-tech hospitals, R&D centres, a medical college, wellness centres, and allied healthcare services.
Project Blueprint and Strategic Vision
According to sources close to the development, the Medicity will feature:
- Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited hospitals
- Medical and nursing colleges
- Research and Development centres
- Medical devices park and cold chain infrastructure
- Wellness and rehabilitation facilities
The government envisions the project as a centralized hub for medical treatment, rehabilitation, care economy services, and pharmaceutical and biotech R&D, making it a one-stop destination for domestic and international patients.
Location Selection and Advantages
The state is currently in the process of identifying a suitable land parcel near Kadi or Kalol in North Gujarat. Sources highlighted several strategic advantages of the area:
- Presence of medical and nursing colleges
- Existing premier hospital and healthcare brands
- Close proximity to Ahmedabad airport
- Nearby pharmaceutical clusters supporting research and development
The Kadi-Kalol region’s infrastructure and existing medical ecosystem make it an ideal choice to attract medical value travel (MVT) and international healthcare investment.
Implementation and Governance
The project is expected to be implemented through a Medical Value Travel (MVT) board, which will include representatives from the State Health and Tourism Departments. The government has expressed a commitment to prioritize and complete the Medicity by 2028, ensuring that the region becomes a globally competitive medical destination.
Learning from Dubai Health Care City
The Medicity will be modelled after Dubai Health Care City (DHCC), a state-of-the-art healthcare and wellness hub hosting premium global and regional healthcare providers. Key features of DHCC include:
- A dedicated healthcare and medical education zone
- Healthcare service delivery zones
- Residential, commercial, and hospitality zones integrated with healthcare
By adopting a similar model, Gujarat aims to integrate advanced medical services with education, research, and wellness facilities, offering a complete ecosystem for patients, professionals, and medical businesses.
Boosting Ahmedabad as a Global Healthcare Hub
The Medicity initiative is part of Gujarat’s broader strategy to establish Ahmedabad as a leading destination for medical tourism, advanced research, and healthcare services. Once operational, the facility is expected to attract international patients, global healthcare providers, and cutting-edge R&D projects, further strengthening the state’s position in India’s healthcare sector.
