Gandhinagar: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Gujarat Police has launched an artificial intelligence-driven tool, ‘NARIT AI’ (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool), aimed at strengthening investigations and improving conviction rates in narcotics cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
AI-Powered Tool for Narcotics Investigations
The newly introduced NARIT AI system is designed to assist investigating officers by providing real-time legal and procedural guidance. It integrates legal provisions, judicial precedents, and investigative protocols to ensure stronger case-building and prosecution.
The initiative marks the first instance of a state police force in India deploying advanced AI technology specifically for narcotics investigations.

Developed by Police and AI Experts
The tool has been developed by Abhay Soni, Superintendent of Police, Western Railway Police (Vadodara Division), in collaboration with a private AI startup.
The conceptualisation was supported by senior officials including K.L.N. Rao and Anupam Singh Gehlot, highlighting strong leadership backing for technology-driven policing.
How ‘NARIT AI’ Works
NARIT AI is built on Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which allows it to generate accurate, context-based insights.
Unlike open AI systems, it operates on a closed, secure database, which includes:
- Supreme Court and High Court judgments
- The NDPS Act, 1985
- New criminal laws: BNS, BNSS, and BSA
- Government circulars and procedural guidelines
This closed architecture ensures:
- Data privacy
- High accuracy
- Minimal risk of AI “hallucinations” (false outputs)

Real-Time Assistance to Investigating Officers
In practical use, officers can upload an FIR into the system, after which the AI tool provides:
- Detailed case analysis
- Identification of procedural gaps
- Evidence collection checklist
- Step-by-step investigation plan
- Prediction of possible defence arguments
- Suggested legal rebuttals based on case law
This effectively turns the tool into a digital legal assistant for police officers.
Addressing Procedural Lapses in NDPS Cases
Officials noted that many narcotics cases in the past resulted in acquittals due to minor procedural errors, despite strong evidence.
NARIT AI aims to bridge these gaps by:
- Standardising investigation procedures
- Guiding officers of all ranks
- Ensuring compliance with legal requirements
This is expected to significantly improve conviction rates in NDPS cases.
Statements from Officials
Harsh Sanghvi emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that the state is committed to eliminating drug-related crimes and strengthening legal action through technology.
IPS officer Abhay Soni described the tool as a “force multiplier,” noting that it will empower all investigating officers to conduct scientific and legally sound investigations, reducing dependency on specialised personnel.
Private and Secure System
The system is designed strictly for internal police use and adheres to existing judicial guidelines on the use of AI in legal processes.
By relying on verified legal databases instead of the open internet, the tool ensures reliability and maintains the integrity of investigations.
Tech-driven Policing
With the launch of NARIT AI, Gujarat Police has taken a major step towards integrating advanced technology into law enforcement. The initiative not only enhances investigative efficiency but also strengthens the legal framework for prosecuting narcotics cases, setting a precedent for tech-driven policing in India.
