Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s telecom sector is on a robust recovery path, adding more than 4 lakh new subscribers in July 2025 alone, bringing the total subscriber base in the state to 6.69 crore, as per the latest Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. This marks a significant rebound from the steep subscriber losses the state experienced in 2024, with a net gain of over 17 lakh new users since January 2025.
Migration and Economic Growth Driving Telecom Demand
One of the primary factors behind this surge is the ongoing migration trend. Many returning migrants are relocating to Gujarat with their families, attracted by the state’s vibrant industrial ecosystem and abundant livelihood opportunities. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand continue to see significant migration flows into Gujarat, fueling demand for new mobile connections.
“A key driver is migration patterns: many returning migrants bring family members from villages, boosting demand for new connections as Gujarat offers ample livelihood opportunities through its robust industrial base,” said a telecom industry insider.
Anticipated Tariff Hike Spurs Number Portability and New Connections
Industry sources also highlight that the prospect of an upcoming tariff hike has prompted many users to switch service providers or port their mobile numbers early to secure more favorable plans. Alongside this, there is a noticeable increase in subscribers opting for additional connections for family members, benefiting from bundled offers and discounted tariffs.
“This trend of number portability and family add-ons is accelerating growth, with operators rolling out targeted offers to capitalize on this demand,” said a telecom salesperson requesting anonymity.
Expansion of Network Infrastructure in Rural Areas
Telecom operators in Gujarat are intensifying efforts to expand network coverage, particularly in rural and underserved regions. Significant investments have been made in infrastructure upgrades and the deployment of 4G and 5G technologies, improving connectivity and service quality. Coupled with aggressive customer acquisition campaigns offering competitive data packages and tariff discounts, these initiatives have played a crucial role in driving subscriber growth.
Operator-Wise Subscriber Growth in Gujarat
In terms of operator performance, Reliance Jio led the growth in July with a net addition of 3.31 lakh subscribers, raising its total subscriber count in Gujarat to 31.43 million. Bharti Airtel followed with an increase of 1.34 lakh users, totaling 12.56 million subscribers in the state.
On the other hand, Vi experienced a significant decline, losing approximately 6.78 lakh subscribers during the same period. BSNL also reported a drop, with a loss of around 9,221 users.
Outlook for Gujarat’s Telecom Market
The recent surge in subscriber numbers highlights Gujarat’s growing prominence as a key telecom market in India. The combination of economic development, migration trends, competitive pricing strategies, and operator investments in network infrastructure is creating a fertile environment for sustained telecom growth.
As Gujarat continues to attract new residents and businesses, telecom demand is expected to rise further, driving deeper penetration of advanced mobile technologies and enhanced digital connectivity across the state.
